Description Unknown 2001-11-18 19:20:59 UTC
When adding the field "page numbers" (either in the footer, header, or main text)
and setting the offset for the numbering to start from over 30 does not
produce the correct numbering, in fact after pressing "ok" on the field
properties window no numbers are displayed and no numbers are printed
if you send the doc to the printer. This happens no matter
what the other choices are selected in the field properties window
for page numbering. In reproducing this defect attention has to be paid
to what number is inserted in the offset, because for small numbers
(up to 10 or 11) the application works fine.

For this defect the application (writer) does not crash,
just the correct numbering is not produced. This happened to me always,
under both linux and windows versions.
Step by step reproducing the defect:
1. open a new doc in the writer
2. insert the footer
3. inside the footer insert the field "page numbers"
4. open the field "page numbers" properties window by
clicking with the right button mouse on the field
5. choose an offset (to be typed in the bottom/right
part of the field properties window) that is
   bigger than "30".
6. give the "ok" to the field properties window.
7. the page numbers field is not anymore displayed
   in the document.

Take care to use big numbers in step 5. above because there is
no defect for small numbers (< 11).

The use of the page offset that you have chosen is dedicated to indicate the previous or
following page(s). Therefore it works only up to a number of pages that do exist in the
document.

To start with a page number of your choice, you must set it at the first paragraph of the page
that shall get the number. Follow these steps:
 - Insert - Manual Break
 - select "Page break"
 - choose a page style
 - check "Change page number"
 - choose a number
 - OK

In the dialog Format - Paragraph, tabpage "Text flow" you will see the settings. This way you
can get rid of it or modify it. Of course, this is also another way to apply it.

You may use this feature in a paragraph style as well. But remember that using this style will
make the numbering start again every time you use it. This makes sense in a chapter heading
style of a document whose chapters shall all start with the same page number (common use is
multi-language user's manuals).

I have found a bug with page numbering with offset.

To reproduce it:
-Create a new blank document in OOo (1.0) .
-Format->Paragraph->Text Flow->Check the boxes "Break" (Page, Before)
and "With page style" (First Page, Page Number=10)->OK
-Insert->Footer->First Page
-Insert->Fields->Page Numbers ("10" appears in the footer)
-Click by the mouse at the upper left corner of the page to start
typing there.
-Setting fontsize to 96 on the toolbar
-start typing with huge letter, filling more than 2 pages WITHOUT
PRESSING ENTER! (So the document contains only one paragraph).
-Remaining at the end of the text: Insert->Footer->Default
-Insert->Fields->Page Numbers (bug: "10" appears again!!!)
-Scrolling back to the first page and pressing ENTER somwhere in the
text
-See the page number at the bottom of the second page: it bacame
good: it is "11"
-If I remove the end-of-paragraph sign entered previously or just
Edit->Undo: the page number remains "11"

So the problem is that the adjusted page number does not change
itself until you do not press an end-of-paragraph into the first
paragraph on the first page.

Best regards,

Csongor HALMAI

The first problem is not a bug; it is a desired behaviour. For
manipulated page numbers use the method Stefan Baltzer described above.
The second problem is totally different from the first one. I'll file
an internal bug for it so that we get this fixed for OpenOffice 643.

I'll close this Issue, because the first problem isd not a bug and the
second will be handled internally.
Thank you for your patience.

After reading the number of issues, concerning this page offset, maybe some
modification of the OOo Ui should be done to ease restarting the page numbering.

This is not natural at all to have to modify the PAGE number in the PARAGRAPH
format menu.
