Description bearl 2002-08-16 20:02:20 UTC
MS Word (at least Word 2000) supports a rotated text formatting command that
doesn't appear to be compatible with OpenOffice's word processing documents.

When the documents are opened in MS Word the text in the tables on the left side
of the documents is rotated and flows along the edge of the page. In OpenOffice
the text isn't rotated, and displays strangely within the table.

The following two URLs point to a couple of sample documents I've stored on our
web server. These documents both use the rotated text feature. I've observed
this in version 1.0.0 and 1.0.1

Duplicated on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OOo 643.

Vertical text rotation inside Word 2000 table cells does not import
properly.

Bill as a work around you could edit the text inside OOo and change
the orientation to vertical. I was able to do that in OOo 643 (
developer build ).

Please be patient with OOo. I've seen many comments from enthusiastic
users such as yourself wanting features so that they can convert
their company to OOo.

We appreciate the support and we are working to meet our users needs.

Reassigned to Michael.

It is not an import issue. Problem is, that "rotated text" in tables
is not supported by / implemented in OpenOffice Writer. So it is not
possible to import it...
MRU->FT: What is the state about implementing this feature into Writer?

Was able to successfully replicate this bug on a Windows 2000
(Service pack 3) system using the latest build (643C) of Open Office
1.0.1.

Steps for replicating the bug are:

1) Create a MS Word file with a table.

2) Edit one of the columns of the table and enter some rotated text
in it.

3) Save the file and try opening this file in Open office writer.

4) As we can see, in open office the rotated text gets displayed in a
strange manner.

One of the good follow-up tests is to see the display when the
rotated text spans more than one line (a file depicting this
situation is attached). When this file is opened in Open Office, the
display became much more strange with the first page and the last
(third) page being totally empty and lot of white spaces in various
part(s) of the document.

I've met the same problem - vertical text in tables from MS Word
document is displayed horizontally in OO Writer.

Tried on OpenOffice 1.0.2 for Linux.

In which version this bug is going to be fixed?

Comment 13 simonbr 2003-06-04 14:14:51 UTC
This bug is still present in version 1.1 beta.

The problem is *not* that Writer cannot display rotated text, because
it can (see Menu: Format -> Character; tab: Position;
Rotation/scaling). Apparently rotated text is not imported correctly
from MS Word documents.

Therefore, IMO this is not an RFE; the issue type should be changed
to DEFECT. It would be great if a target milestone could be assigned
as well.

We're planning an cell attribute "text direction" which allows each
cell either horizontal left-to-right, horizontal right-to-left or
vertical (right-to-left). This will cover the needs of a lot of CJK
documents.
What we will not implement in the first step is a rotation of the cell
content by 90° or 270°.
Comment 21 utomo99 2003-10-30 08:41:59 UTC
utomo > AM:
Rotated text in a cell (90 and 270 degree) is common.
( I didnt remember the Issue number but I found some)
Please consider it to be implemented in first step.
Thanks
