When I try to open a DOS or UNIX text file from the open file dialog as type
Text CSV I get "An unrecoverable error has occurred". If the file contains a
null character, the file opens as a text document (may be cause of issue 3407?
see also issue 2162). Will attempt to attach files. I have tried various file
extensions (.txt, .dos, .null, .csv); seems to have no effect (unlike issue 3407).

OK, I know you're not supposed to use "Get External Data" with Text
CSV files (so why is it an option?), but FYI selecting a text file and
type Text CSV from the Get External Data dialog also causes an
unrecoverable error.

This is *exactly* the problem we are also having: 1.0.1/RedHat 7.2/2.4.7.

It would be nice if the "unrecoverable error" dialgo contained *any*
tracing information -- I expect lousy errors from M$ software, but not
from OSS.  :-)

If I can get clearance from the client to post the file, I'll hang an
attachment.

This is a P2 error for my client -- for whom the availability of OOo
was the primary selling point for the system cutover I've just
completed for them; can we raise the priority?  (If this bug hangs
around for a while, they'll raise it to P1 ... and I may eat a system.
 That Would Be Bad.  :-)

Yet Another Test File:

1,2,3,4,5
6,7,8,9,10
hdh,dhd,hdh,dhd,hdh

Will also crash on load.

As another test, I took my Unix format file which crashes (approx
20KB) and converted it to DOS mode with VIM.

Still crashes.

Please bump to P2; this is a *major* issue for me and my client...

(and I have enough other problems here; I have about a $6000 system 
hung on Linux and OOo here, I really can't afford to eat it.

Ok, well, I'm beginning to see that like every *other* bugzilla I've 
ever worked with, no one's monitoring *this* one either.

<sigh>

Time to switch to StarOffice, where at least I'm paying for the right 
to scream at someone.

Same problem here. Linux Suse 7.3
CSV files are not opened, the error message as described above appears.

It works great under Windows, but not under Linux.

Just another confirmation that very basic csv files produce
"unrecoverable error" for OOo 1.0.0/RH7.3/2.4.18. 

This is very basic (but critical) functionality that I recall working
just fine in previous builds.

Last time I succesfully could read csv files seems to be Jan 7, 2002.
After that I have upgraded (actually installed because I don't believe
the RH upgrade functionality any more) my RH 7.2 to RH 7.3/2.4.18 at
Jul 10, 2002. I can't recall if I have tried to open csv files after
my upgrade since now. I assume that there is some conflict between OO
1.0 and newest Linux components. Damned.

Hi Brian,
no crash on the first file in OOo 1.0.1. Second file is a duplicate of
2162 reported by yourself.

Upgraded from RedHat 7.3 and OOo 1.0.1 to Red Hat 8.0 (patched to
kernel 2.4.18-19.8.0), and the OOo 1.0.1 distro that came with it. Now
works for me. I recall another post saying this may have been an issue
only with RedHat 7.x. I agree. (It never was a problem in the Windows
build.) I'm going to mark the issue closed (do I have that authority?).
