Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 24776
unintuitive order or settings in Format- Styles- Catalog- Numbering Styles- Modify
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:12:58 UTC
The outline numbering dialog [Format->Styles->Catalog->Numbering Styles->Modify] is a poorly-implemented GUI. The Position tab has the horizontal spacing controls out of order: 'Spacing to text' affects the second line of a paragraph, and 'Minimum space numbering <-> text' - affects the first line of a paragraph. This is counter-intuitive; they should be listed in reverse order, ie, in the order that the visual representation in that tab suggests - first line, then second line. The order of controls for alignment of the first and subsequent lines of a paragraph should be swapped to be in a more logical sequence. (Supercedes Issue 24375)

Though I don't think just changing order is the solution, although it will result in more people doing it correct directly, I think the writing should be changed. I found it especially confusing that the "space to text" doesn't refer to the space between the number and the text, but between the left margin and the text (not sure whether this is really the case). Maybe "Additional text-only indent", instead of 'Spacing to text' would work better. It is unclear where 'spacing' refers to... spacing to what?
Hmmm... I see geofffarrel was told to split up this issue... I do think however number 1 and 2 are very much related. They deal with UI issues (3 & 4 to behaviour issues)... But since Issue 24777 is more related to wording, I'll repost my comment there as well. The other ones are more behaviour-related issues.
To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
Not a valid bug report, lots of questions a) no bug related individual summary b) intention of bug is difficult to understand, I haven't a clue what reporter wants to tell with "'Spacing to text' affects the second line of a paragraph"? May be I did not understand something, but that setting is for distance between bullet (or Numbering) and following text? Comment 2 already tells about possible misunderstanding of this report c) Is this one really Linux related? d) dialogs now (AOO 4) look very difficult to the dialogs of OOo1, so the question is whether the problems still do exist, report might be OBSOLETE e) for now I modify Summary to that what I read in report, further investigation later f) there are some similar reports of the same reporter with meaningless summaries, there also some rework will be required, I added them to "See also".
d) ... dialogs now (AOO 4) look very DIFFERENT to ...
