Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 55986
impossible to paste text with diacritic symbols - regression
Last modified: 2013-02-07 21:56:00 UTC
kde 3.4.2. try copying some text from, for example, www.tvnet.lv that contains diacritic symbols and pasting it in an oo.org application. if the text is plaintext (try to copy from opera), all diacritic symbols are replaced with "?" on the same machine doing this with oo.org 1.1.4 works flawlessly. if i copy that text from firefox, it is copied correctly. if i copy that text, paste it in kedit and then try pasting in oo.org, it is turned to "?" again. pasting works in previous version of oo.org and kedit. text that is copied from kedit and pasted in oo.org also shows up with "?" this has been reproduced on several computers and pretty much makes working with 2.0 versions in latvia impossible :/ this is almos the same as issue 18962, but 1.1 versions started to work in this regard at some point. now pre-1.9 have regressed :/
TM->US: please have a look, thanks !
can you pls. confirm: cp&paste from firefox to OO.o2.0 works but from opera fails?
i'm not sure this was directed at me ;), but : copy and paste from most applications (kedit, opera) to oo.org 2.0 fails; copying from these applications to 1.1.4 works; copying from firefox to 2.0 works.
us->pl: we seem to have problems to cp&paste at least latin extended characters from opera to OO.o 2.0 (firefox is innocent). Can you help?
pl->us: actually the diacritics work quite well when pasting from kate, but not when pasting from konqueror. This seems to be a matter of HTML import rather than the clipboard. Who does the html import ?
us->ama: would you kindly reassign to the respective person regarding html-import. Thx.
Retargetted due to workload
I can confirm this very unpleasant bug. When copying some text with diacritics from some apps, the special characters are replaced by ?. Try this text for example: ÄŒierna Hora sa spamätáva z najhorÅ¡ieho železniÄného neÅ¡Å¥astia vo svojej histórii. When I copy it from Opera, Konqueror or Krusader (it's not a browser, but doesn't matter) and paste into OO writer, chars like Å¡Äž are replaced by ?. When copying from Firefox, it works fine. OpenOffice 2.0.1, linux, installed from OOo_2.0.1_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz, not manually compiled.
As far as I can see, the bug is at the OOo end (tested with 2.1): it requests the text/html;charset=utf-8 clipboard target but decodes it as utf-16. Note that mozilla only advertises text/html (along with a slew of internal formats). (And on a related note, for plain text OOo seems to prefer COMPOUND_TEXT over UTF8_STRING, which could cause some C&P issues as well...)

I don't know if it is important or not, but currently it still does not work, but every letter seems to be translated from UTF8 (?) to raw 8bit. So no more question marks, but it is of course no improvement. Opera->OOffice mentioned here works fine now. However Konqueror (and only when displaying text, not when editing)->OOffice does not work. My report from KDE: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149273
some additional data from my system : kde 3.5.7, opera 9.23, oo.org m225. pasting from opera and kedit now works (i must admit, i didn't even notice at which point did this change...). konq->oo.org does not. but it fails completely with 'requested clipboard format is not available'. oh, well. can't reproduce that anymore. it now pastes the text, but, as noted, text is garbled. not sure which app to blame now :)
Works for me (KDE3.5.9 + OO2.4.0).
works for me as well with oo.org 2.4.0, kde 3.5.9 (konqueror & kedit) and opera 9.27. for some reason i (as a submitter) can't close this, though.
