Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 4133
Splash Screen Locks Screen
Last modified: 2003-05-15 10:34:19 UTC
Hi there, I'm using OpenOffice on a regular basis, and it's really cool. One thing, however, annoys the bit Jesus out of me. During startup, the application shows a splash screen which basically locks the entire screen, meaning I cannot switch focus to other windows and continue other work in parallel (seen with windowmaker window manager). Personally, I do think you should get rid of it, because at that poing I know that I started OpenOffice a few seconds ago and do not want to be locked out of other applications during its startup time. Thanks, tom
JA->US: looks like a focus bug with window maker. Could you please have a look at it ? (changed issue type from enhancement to defect...reassigned)
I'm sorry, but I ddidn't seem to explain the behavior correctly. It's not a focus issue, it's rather that the splash screen always stays on top of all open windows, nand I couldn't find a setting which changes that. Can the reason be that the splash screen is being opened in a transient window? I don't have another window manager installed so I can't try at the moment. tom
I have the same problem with office1.0, X4.1 and icewm. _f***king_ annoying to say the _least_. Im tempted to download the source & grep for the offending code... ill patch if i find it. other than that small issue I love staroffice. Thanks heeps
Ignoring the first statement from "blackisha@openoffice.org". Trying to get this more clearly. There are two different things standing in your way I guess. - first thing is the splashscreen itself, which can be turned off. Set "Logo=0" in <openoffice_install_dir>/program/sofficerc - second thing is the nice level of the starting office, which may acquire to much system resources. So that you can't change to a different task, as your system seems to be blocked (for a moment). What do you think? Is the nice level too high? Or does switching the logo off solve your problem?
Setting 'Logo=0' does cut it for me. Thanks for the hint. tom
It strikes me that the splash screen should probably be clickable to "make it go away" - the frustration stems not from it showing (which is useful feedback) but from its refusal to get out of the way. It is annoying on my Athlon 1.5 GHz and _really_ frustrating on my Duron 1GHz at work. I use IceWM and have the "always-on-top" problem with IceWM and KDE 2.2. Haven't yet tried other environments. A "-nosplash" command line arg wouldn't hurt either, and a FAQ entry about this would be really nice.
It is amusing to find that people with a 1gH machine find this so annoying. On my Pentium II 233 laptop it takes over two minutes (maybe three) for OOo to load. This translates into two or three minutes that i can't do anything. Now that's annoying! We've heard from WindowMaker and IceWM users. Now i'll add KDE to the list of window managers under which this problem is seen. Comments in this bug talk about several different things. The bug is marked "started". May i ask how the problem is going to be addressed? Will the splash screen become dismissible or will it be allowed to be covered by other windows? Or both?
us->of: you know more.
Hi Christof, I think this is similar to 94480.
Is that number right? I can't find issue 94480.
requires rework of the splash screen
This is the same issue as 1958. Still broken as of Oo1.0.2. I assume it will show up in 2.0, but I have no facts to base that on.
Yes, it is the same as issue 1958 *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 1958 ***
