Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 3393
Regular Expressions Don't Seem to work
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:00:23 UTC
I am trying to use regular expressions in the DSUM ( and other) functions within the spread sheet. Whenever I enable regular expressions all the queries fail. For example I have a text column ,"Name" and a numerical column "Price". I wanted to sum all prices which are in rows with the substring "robot" in the Name column. If I do DSUM with regular expressions enabled, I get no matches, even when the Regualar Expression is "robot" and I have a row which has exactly the Name "robot" in it. If I turn off regular expressions, then DSUM correctly returns the sum of all rows which have exactly the name "robot". The regular expression search also seems to fail in the Search and Replace window. The same queries fail in both versions 641C and 638, under both Linux and Windows98, all running on PentiumIII's. I'm new to IssueZilla. I tried to find any previous Issues with the phrase regular expression in the summary -- but found nothing. I realize I may be making some kind of trivial mistake -- so I tried to use the exmaple presented in the help docs where it says you can type all.*to find every cell which starts with all. This also fails. Am I doing something trivially wrong? I just guessed on the subcomponent. Dan Graham graham@prospero.uoregon.edu
Hi Daniel, I'll have a look. It would be very helpful if you could attach an document as example. Regards, Peter
Peter, you don't need a document for that. There simply is no regular expression support in OOo yet. After querying for "regular" in issue subjects I wonder why SBA marked issues #2101 and #2323 as "resolved fixed", because the fix is only in SO6. This is because the regular expressions are part of the i18n framework to be open-sourced, see http://l10n.openoffice.org/i18n_framework/Open-sourcing_i18n_framework.html
Hi Eike, the issue is of course reproduceble because not implemented. I queried the same issues and wondered too. I already send Stefan a PM. Regards, Peter
Yet to come.
#2101 cannot be fixed before this task is done.
#2323 cannot be fixed before this task is done.

Is this feature still missing from the 1.0 release? The link given by Eike Rathke estimated a "1-2 week" period for it, while getting legal permission. Who could update that status?
Yep, the entire new i18n framework is not included in OOo1.0. The "1-2 weeks" period refers to the time the task will take (effort), not a due date. The document now is up-to-date.
Reopening because it doesn't show up in MyIssues anymore (was set to RESOLVED LATER).

Is there anything we can do about this? people to call, fax, email, or write to? the necessary approval should come from GNU and who else? Who could finally take the decision to take the alternate options?
@Jorge: Please be patient, things are clarified now, we'll use the regular expressions of the C++ Boost library.
Thanks. Yes, I guess my impatience was showing through... ;) I just needed an update, and to know whether there was something I could do. Thanks again.

Should the componant on this be changed to Framework? Isn't this going to be added to the framework for use in all programs?

@Scott: framework wouldn't be the right component. The concrete integration will happen in the i18npool module being part of the l10n project. I therefor changed the component and QA contact entries accordingly.
...
Framework was just my first thought. The I10n project, I thought was for language. I didn't want anybody to think this was just for the Spreadsheet program. Thanks

The most satisfying RESOLVED FIXED i ever set..
Eike, I'm sorry; but this still isn't working for me in a freshly downloaded beta 1.1. I completely vaped all previous installations, as far as I can tell. I'm still not getting any of the wildcard and regex searches to work. Even the simple ones, like [:digit:] and [:alpha:] or .$
I can be more precise: i OOo 1.1 beta, no searches at all work when I have the "regular expressions" check box ticked, including the ones that don't have any regexes in them (they should, of course, since a character matches itself). Without that box ticked, ordinary searches work. Wildcard ones still don't. Windows 2000, SP3, if that makes any difference.
@Andrew: Please read the target: OOo 1.1 Beta2 (2!) And please don't mess around with the version field.
YES! ROCK! now that regex is fixed, the only thing stopping world domination by OOo is email merge. Unless that's been fixed..?
calc06 ready for QA @Frank: Please remember that this must be tested in the OOo installation set built in instsetoo!
reset resolution to fixed
Peter please check it if possible. Frank
Integrated in CWS calc06.
Verified in CWS calc06. Everybody is invited to test Regular Expressions after the release of OOo1.1Beta2.
OK in integration build (8588) for CWS srx644_m10s1. -> Everybody is invited to test regular expressions in OOo from next public build in 1.1 branch on.
