Description cbelch 2002-03-07 15:13:43 UTC
Hi,
My colleague has received a MSOffice 2000/XP file (5,000 KB) that has 27,165
rows and 5 columns of data (mostly formulas). He has tried opening the file in
MSOffice 95 but the Excel 95 only has 16,384 rows in total. As we are
currently trialing the OO software we thought we would try to open it in the OO
Spreadsheet application. So far so good ...... BUT when we make any amendments
and try to re-save the file the application hangs. Is there a problem working
with large files in the Open Office Spreadsheet application?
Thanks,
Cheryl Belch

Hi Cheryl,

to assign this Issue to the responsible person I need some more Infos.

How much memory and what a CPU is used in this WIN95 machine, do want
to save to Excel 97/2000/XP format or to the Calc format ? How long
have you been waiting before you considered the whole application hangs ?

A 5 MB Excel file containing a lot of formulas can cause OOo to
consume a lot of time for saving, also the file size of the saved
Excel file will increase. It's a problem with Excels shared formulas.

Best regards
Frank

Hi Frank,
Sorry for the delay ... I need to do further tests with my W95 user
who has been out of the office. Should be this afternoon so I will
get back to you later today with results.

By the way the PC in question is W95, 700 MHZ, 128 RAM, 10 GB!

Kind regards,
Cheryl.

Hi Frank,
I have completed further tests on the large spreadsheet. The file
did finaly save ... I think I was trying to close too soon when the
file hadn't finished saving BUT is it possible for the saving to be
made faster? It took 5 minutes to save the document (in MS Excel it
takes 2 seconds).

Any further comments?

Thanks, Cheryl.
Comment 5 frank 2002-03-13 12:10:36 UTC
Hi Cheryl,

maybe we can make it faster, but not on the short term. If it's
possible please attach such a big Excel file to this Issue using the
'Create a new attachment' Link on the Issue page. File size limtation
is 10 MB so it should not be a problem.

Please keep in mind that this bug tracking system is open to the
public, so please do not post any confidential data. If possible
change the numbers to randomly generated ones and change the text
fields to x values to keep your companies secrets.

Best regards

Frank

PS reassigned to Daniel who keeps this as performance task

Comment 7 cbelch 2002-03-13 14:10:41 UTC
Hi Frank,

I have attached the spreadsheet (data changed for confidentiality) as
requested.

Thanks,
Cheryl

ps. it states that you can only attach files less than 1MB, I took
your word for it and attached a 6MB file. Hope it's okay!

Accepted ???

What does this mean? Are you still looking into this problem or have
you just accepted that nothing can be done about it?
Comment 13 daniel.rentz 2002-06-17 13:09:28 UTC
I think there is the possibility to make the export faster. The issue is on my list which
contains about 25 IssueZilla bugs and a lot more internal bugs... Please be patient, I
will not forget this issue.

Hi,

Just to note, we are experience this same problem on Mac OS X of course. Using an
8.5MB Excel spreadsheet (not "Large File.xls"), the following benchmarks were observed by a tester:

OpenOffice.org:-----------------
Initial Open of Excel file: 25s
Save as OOo Calc File: 6min
OOo Calc File Size: 5.5MB
Open of OOo Calc File: 6m 28s

Office v.X Excel:-----------------
Open same Excel File: 6s
Save same Excel File: 7.7s

OpenOffice.org with Large File.xls:---
Open Original Excel file: 12s
Save as OOo Calc File: 2m 7s
Open OOo Calc File: 2m 36s

Powerbook G4 800 mhz, OS X 10.2.3, 1GB ram

3385 I believe is a duplicate of 1905. Can someone mark as such and close this.
Comment 19 stp 2006-05-06 23:24:47 UTC
As of 2.0.2 the attached file doesn't seem to bother OOo much. Please confirm.
