Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 2557
document -net and other install options, implement -h or --help
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:53:51 UTC
There is already discussion in bug 1940 about defaulting to the -net install option. In the meantime, please *document* the feature somewhere. I can't figure out any way to find out about the feature. It's really impossible. I knew that some sort of network install feature existed so i tried: setup -network setup --network setup -n All of these resulted in an abort. So, then i thought i'd try setup --help setup -help All of which aborted. Why isn't there a way to discover install options? Then i tried looking all over OpenOffice.org. I couldn't find any installation instructions anywhere. Not about -net or about anything else for that matter. The only way for me to discover this was by doing a search on IssueZilla. The README.html is an empty shell as in the README text doc. This is crazy! No one should have to waste this much time and effort to find out about an installation feature. Think of the frustration i would have had if i hadn't even *heard* of the feature before. The feature is not intuitively named. The feature is useful (and sometimes important) whether or not the computer is networked. Why not rename the feature "multiuser". My rant is now over. Here are the specific things i'm asking to be fixed in this bug: 1. Implement a -h/--help option for setup, which shows install options, including -net. 2. Document install options, including -net in the README and README.html files. I will file a separate bug to request an installation page on OpenOffice.org. The "multiuser" label will also be filed under a separate bug.
I send these setup ideas to Falko, he is collecting them for further implementations.
I forgot to mention, an unrecognized option should not abort, but should print out the same information as the requested -h/--help feature.
This issue is re-assigned to Christian Jansen for further evaluation.
Yes, the -"something" switches should be better documented. If were going into the planning phase this will be discussed.

With OO.o 1.1 we have a "setup -help" option. So, I think this task can be closed.
