Description dankegel 2003-05-23 18:08:48 UTC
See issue 11950.

The open source community has come to expect all programs to follow
the Gnu project's standard commandline arguments --help and --version.
This is true on all platforms that support a commandline, e.g. Linux,
Windows, and MacOSX.

Running soffice or the setup utility with argument --help should display
the same message as running it with argument -help (single dash).

Running soffice or the setup utility with argument --version should display
the software's version and build (i.e. the same info currently shown on
the first line of the output of -help for soffice).

This should be pretty trivial to fix, so I'm marking it as a defect.
IMHO it should be resolved for ooo1.1rc1.

This is a request that is voiced often among folks with a strong GNU
background.
OpenOffice has been following the x-toolkit style of command line
options (-display :0.1 -foo -bar param...) and -h/-help are no
exception to this rule.
However, I am also aware of the fact that the current command-line
handling and syntax is somewhat lacking behind and should be changed
to a more modern behavior - this however can not be achived by
changing random options around. I would like to encourage everyone who
is interested in seeing a change in the way the commandline works to
have a look at what the commandline is currently supporting and come
up with a concept/RFE that covers all options and not just the
personal 'pet-peeve'

We should enhance the command line handling in the future since many
users would like to see the behaviour that they are familiar with.
However a consistent overall concept should be thought after and this
sould be implemented across all executables (soffice, setup, pkgcheck
etc...)
