Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 21108
Search handler for OOo files on MS Windows
Last modified: 2004-11-23 10:55:29 UTC
The Windows Shell supports several search handler that allow users to locate files, printers etc. The default Windows search handler is not able to search in OOo files, but it's possible to create a custom search handler for OOo files that may be registered with the Windows Shell. There are virtually no limits in what the user may search for, e.g. a single word, a text phrase, a specific author etc. A user has two ways to select a search engine. The first way is from the Start menu. With systems earlier than Microsoft® Windows® 2000, selecting the Find command on the Start menu displays a submenu of the available search engines. With Windows (R) 2000 and later, the Start menu's Find command is renamed Search. A user can also launch a search handler from the Windows (R) Explorer. On systems earlier than Windows (R) 2000, they click the Find command on the Tools menu to display essentially the same menu as the one associated with the Start menu. However, Windows Explorer (R) for Windows (R) 2000 and later handles search engines in a very different way. Instead of handling search engines as a submenu of the Tools menu, there is now a Search button on the toolbar. Clicking this button opens the Explorer bar's Search pane. An application may create and register its own search pane based on DHTML that will be launched by the Windows Explorer for application specific file types.

The specification is in progress.
Due to missing resources the product team and the development decided to shift this feature to the next target 'OOo later'. It is unlikely to integrate this feature in OOo 2.0. If somebody in the community have the knowledge to help Sun here, please contact the development and retarget this feature.

This task is integrated in OOo 2.0 (milestone m54). Out of this reason I have to change the target milestone for OOo 2.0.
