Description pplwong 2003-07-29 17:16:06 UTC
Hi, I've just installed RC2 Traditional Chinese version.
In the installation program, all Chinese chars appeared as squares (i.e. I can't
see a single Chinese char).

RC2's GUI appears in correct Chinese font though, only installer have the problem.

Also, when looking at files through Windows Explorer in XP, the descriptions
shown on the file icon also appears as squares. (when you look at a file in XP,
like winamp's files, it shows the name of the mp3 etc on the "icon" of the file
in windows explorer, I'm referring to those icons).

I uses Windows XP Traditional Chinese version.
I also get some response from some other users (uses Windows 2000 Traditional
Chinese version) who told me they've experienced the same problem when installing.

Actually, it's RC1 that I used.

I've just tested with English Windows 2000 but with all default
settings (i.e. location, region, default lang, etc) set to Chinese.

Not only the installation screen appears to be all squares, but all
GUI (not only installation GUI) appears to be squares instead of
Chinese words.

Sorry for posting another message.
But I've just test with 1.0.3.1 Chinese build.
And it works well on all these computers.
So it seems to be a depression.

Hi Sander,
any idea about that? Missing or wrong fonts?
Comment 5 Olaf Felka 2003-07-30 08:41:16 UTC
Reassigning.

After looking at all issues about this, I've get the following conclusion:

1) These problems exists in 1.1 RC builds while OK in 1.0.3.1.

2) Installation's Chinese font are displayed in square in OOo 1.1 RC1
Chinese Version.

3) (After done install)The Chinese on OOo (1.1 zh) menu bars are
squares in some computers (not all, but seems to be a very common
problem).

4) The Chinese in "Load URL" and "Font Name" on menu bar are also
displayed as squares in OOo 1.1 RC2 (English build).

5) The contents are OK in all error reports I get.

This is a very serious problem for Chinese build. A blocker bug.
Cannot release Chinese build 1.1 without this fixed.

I just get the email from release.
So I'm posting again...

History:
It worked in 1.0.3.1 and I heard that it worked in 1.1 beta also.

It doesn't work in 1.1 RC1.

People who report this are mostly from hk and tw. Most computers are
using Chinese Windows etc, so all their settings should be by default
"totally Chinese".

Method to Validate:
Just start the installation program of OOo 1.0.3. Cancel it. Then try
the installation program of OOo 1.1. You should see the difference at
once since you must be able to identify "squares" and "non-squares".

The problem after installation is not "obvious" because it works in
some computers but not others. It works on my Chinese XP, and doesn't
work on my RedHat8.0 (which has Traditional Chinese as default).

Setup Method:
Win2000/XP: Go to Regional setting. In one of the tabs, there is a big
list of languages. Select Traditional Chinese and set that as default.
Restart and all Chinese interfaces should work without any problem.
Try the "Method to Validate".

Linux with RedHat:
Simply set your language to Traditional Chinese and restart.
Everything should be fine except may be some "spacing" problem. Try
the "Method to Validate" then.

I've just tried in Redhat8 for OOo RC2. When setting the
"Numbering/Bullets" (from right click menu of "Number/Bullets")
--->"Options" tab. In the numbering field, there should be a list of
"numbers" in quite some languages including Chinese. Those are
"squares" also. Chinese in the GUI of Mozilla, Kate, Koncole, etc all
work. Only OOo 1.1 RC2 has squares.

Duplicate to issue 16977 which is targeted at OOo 1.1.1 and
fixed in CWS vcl7pp1r1.
Comment 12 hdu@apache.org 2003-08-06 13:54:50 UTC
I also merged the corresponding patch for Japanese
http://www.openoffice.org/files/111/85035/vcl_ui.patch from
Yoshiyuki Masutomi-san.
Comment 13 hdu@apache.org 2003-08-06 14:38:11 UTC
HDU->OF: please verify, be careful that all SO fonts have to be
removed from the test machines first
Comment 14 Olaf Felka 2003-08-06 15:22:39 UTC

Jeff, I've took a look at your file.

The first tab name is "good", and the one in B5 field is "How're you?
/ Are you good?", right?

The encoding appear to be SimHei on my computer.

I'm using WinXP and OOo 1.1 Final (English version, as I don't know
when SUN will announce the release of 1.1 Chiense version).

You says your version is "current", but how "current" is it? Are using
Chiense Windows?
