After selecting a large area of text in a large file I selected Format, 
Case/Characters, and Uppercase. The selected area was shifted right one 
character. File, Save was not available. Then I made some text changes. 
Finally, I selected File and Save. OpenOffice then hangs.

Should be fixed in 1.1 release.
