Description kelvine 2003-04-18 04:25:26 UTC
Hi,

As a 56K modem user I find downloading the 50-60MB takes a long time and on a
number of occassions has failed.

Whilst it is possible to install packages to assist in downloading this is not
my preference. (Each download program introduces its own set of issues.)

Also I wonder how many people simply give up once the download fails for them.

From what I can see, splitting the file could be easily achieved (at least
under Windows) as the zip file consists of around 400 individual files which
could be easily grouped into 10MB lots. Each zip file could then be
downloaded and extracted into the one install folder.

I realise this is a bit more error prone as a user may not download all
required files creating even more support problems. Maybe the setup program
could be altered to do a quick file count and check sum to see that all files
are available.

To me I would be just happy to check the folder for the number of files using
Windows explorer.

I think there is a sufficient number of people who experience this problem
based on email on the discuss and users list, so I decided to raise this issue
so that people can vote on it.

Thanks for an excellent program

Kelvin

change component.

mh->is: is this something which fits into your concept of native installer ?
Comment 3 stp 2004-09-09 10:31:23 UTC
I suggest offering Bittorrent downloads instead. It will also ease the server load.

I second the suggestion for providing a BitTorrent download facility. That's why
I voted for this bug.

Thank you!

is -> mh: This does not fit into the concept of native installer. Of course we
think about better download possibilities, but not in the context of the
creation of the installation sets.
Andre is currently investigating the download sets. Most probable we will
create the download sets in a new process, after the normal native installation
sets are created. For me there is at the moment nothing to do for this,
therefore I send you back this task.

yes, providing it with bittorrent might be a solution, anybody out there who is
able to take this issue ?
Comment 7 stp 2005-02-20 12:06:15 UTC
May I suggest WONTFIX and refer to the issue regarding bittorrent downloads
issue 13576 .
Comment 8 stp 2005-02-20 12:06:46 UTC

Hi,

I no longer need this facility as I use ADSL. Others around me don't need this
facility either, as I provide them with copies of OpenOffice.org as required.

From my perspective the issue can be closed.

If others feel differently, I am sure they can suggest reopening the issue.

Thanks

Kelvin

set issue to WONTFIX, the demand for this seems to be pretty low nowadays.

Closing. Cheers.
