Description azmisj 2005-01-11 15:06:52 UTC
Description of problem:
could u guys / gals pls include the torrent files seeding on the
torrent network for the next test and stable releases for this OpenOffice.org Suite

fyi, i managed to donwload, install and run the azureus torrent
client. but it seems that the download is
still very slow (read: crawling) compared to normal download method
(direct from website) although i've tried almost all of the suggested
solution to speed up the download speed. it should be faster right,
download using the torrent network?

i might be wrong, but it seems that now u guys / gals provide us (the
downloader, end-user) with only the dot-torrent files only on your
main websites and your download mirror websites.

i think, imho, it would be gr8 if you guys / gals provide us with the
dot-torrent file on the main website and the seeding torrent files on
the torrent network hosted on your main and mirror download servers,
if you know what i meant.

since your main and mirror download servers is running 24x7 on
fat-pipes (super speed), it should be a much faster and reliable
method for us all.

i know and i do understand it would be kinda a big thing for you to
change the download method and procedure deals with all your mirror
download servers organisations, if any, but imho, i think it would be
a big advancement for us all to have a faster and more reliable download.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
All Future OpenOffice.org Suite(test & stable releases)

How to reproduce:
i might be wrong, but it seems that now u guys / gals only provide us
(the downloader, end-user) with only the dot-torrent files only on
your main websites and your download mirror websites.

slow download speed on the torrent network. it is faster to download
the normal way (directly from the website)

Actual results:
only dot-torrent files exist on your main and mirror download websites

Expected results:
i think, imho, it would be gr8 if you guys / gals provide us with the
dot-torrent file on the main website and the seeding torrent files on
the torrent network hosted on your main and mirror download servers,
if you know what i meant.

Additional info:
i think, imho, it would be gr8 if you guys / gals provide us with the
dot-torrent file on the main website and the seeding torrent files on
the torrent network hosted on your main and mirror download servers,
if you know what i meant.

REALLY APRC8 UR HELP,TIME AND ATTENTION ON THIS. i THANK YOU GUYS /
GALS BEYOND MEASURES. KEEP UP THE GR8 EFFORT.

Main problem is most likely that the majority of users download the file, and immediately close their client. This in turn
means there are less (considerably less) sources available for uploads, which in turn makes the tranfer slow.

We need to try and emphasize to users that they shuld leave their BT client run for several days at least, preferably
every time they are on line. This will ensure more upload sources, and faster transfers.

(As an aside, I once used th Azureus client, found it rather slow... Now using the client which comes standard with
Mandrake Linux, it is much faster).

May be those on the cc list have some experience with clients and the expetation
we can have...

I managed to download the "OOo_1.1.4_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz.torrent" with a
whopping 3 MB/s (that's megabyte, not bit). So I reckon the speed should be
alright for most users. I don't think hosting the actual torrent files on more
locations will speed up the download process. Looking at the stats on:
http://borft.student.utwente.nl:6969 we can see there aren't that many peers
for any particular torrent. This might indeed be the cause of slow downloads.
However, I have 2 uploaders running 24/7 with a "fat pipe", or in normal
language a 100 Mbit uplink, which should garantee reasonable speeds.

Hi,

I think we need to streamline the process behind offering bittorrent downloads
and limit the need for manual maintenance. Currently
http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/bittorrent/download.html offers assorted
releases and languages.

Does anyone know of a reliant bittorrent service that can automatically mirror
ftp://ftp.stardiv.de/pub/OpenOffice.org/ with torrents?

Possible services:
http://www.tlm-project.org/
http://www.open-bits.org/

Updated summary.

bittorrent would be a really effective way to spread the localized versions.
Some countries make heavy use of P2P systems.

The localized versions are already on the bittorent network! ;)
