Description timcastle 2002-12-20 14:02:22 UTC
First of all, let me start by saying I really like OOo and we are using it in
our non-profit organization. Thanks to all who have contributed. That being
said, I have two major issues with the program. Speed and system resource
usage.

Startup is very slow and often give a bad first impression to new users.
Speeding this up would help in user acceptance greatly. OOo is a great program
and is more powerful than many alternatives, but the slow startup gives just
the opposite first impression.

The other issue is the system resources issue. It uses them all. I find it
more difficult to work in other programs while in OOo than it is in alternative
suites. When working in OOo alone everything is fine, but when I start having
multiple programs open, my system is much more prone to crashing.

Quickstart is not really much help. It does help somewhat, but not enough to
warrant it's name. In addition, the database component doesn't always release
files when Quickstart is in use, so I usually don't install it.

On a positive note. I really like the database connectivity. It is a little
harder to set up a datasource than in M$ Office, but once it is said up there
are a lot more features at your disposal.

All in all, a great suite. Better performance would help first-timers stick
with OOo and realize this.
