I couldn't find this bug reported anywhere in the Windows bug lists.

When opening any document across a windows share that isn't a mapped drive, 
OpenOffice 1.0.1 starts the Text Document editor, but does not load the file. 

Example: 
I want to open the file named '1.doc' located on the server 'files' in the 
directory 'chris'. To access this, I can simply enter '\\files\chris\1.doc' in 
Word's filename box. Unfortunately OpenOffice doesn't properly handle this, so 
the file fails to open. 
It also always opens with the Text Document editor, possibly because it can't 
determine the filetype of the file trying to be opened.

If the share has been mapped to a local drive letter, it works fine.

Please try using the latest OOo 1.1 Rc5, 
Your version already old enough, and many bug fixes since your version 
and 1.1 RC5. If the problem still happend in 1.1 RC5 please report back
