Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 98828
control-F should not close the Find dialog!
Last modified: 2010-04-27 21:03:59 UTC
This design causes the following behavior. ^F Enter some text. Ooops. The text went into the document Undo. This a very nonstandard way to handle the key that opens the Find dialog. I have never seen another app do it. Consequently I have to learn to be extra careful with OO Writer.
It's ok to close this dialog with the shortcut that called it because: - This is the way other OOo *non modal* dialog (Navigator, Stylist...) can be closed - no other control is using Ctrl+F in the dialog. Please, in the future, use "Ctrl+" instead of "^". It helps understanding faster what you mean.

All other OOo *non modal* dialogs should be changed, too. This topic should be put to a user test.
Arguments against this: - Examples like F5, F11 or Ctrl+F are reserved shortcut that only call those panels/dialogs -> they cannot interfere with other functions in the software having the same shortcut (unlike mnemonics in a dialog, using Alt+letter) - Those pane/dialogs work like a toggle ON/OFF - For usability and further more accessibility reasons it is needed be able to open and close those dialogs easily with the keyboard when the focus/cursor is not in them. Without those toggle shortcuts the way to close them would be unusable. Please, feel free to discuss this in the UX mailing lists.
Oops. meant to reopen.

I think this Issue should be reopened. Ctrl+F doesn't have to close the dialog (only open it). If you need to close dialog you can do as in all other software Alt+Tab until you have focused the dialog and thereafter Alt+F4 to close dialog. This way OpenOffice could behave in a standard way.
