Description ianmillington 2002-12-04 00:00:59 UTC
Hi

OO 643c is extremely poor at scrolling through long documents and spreadsheets.
The more pages a document contains, the slower it goes. Also (same issue) when I
dictate into it via Dragon 4, my dictation is appearing 1 letter at a time,
rather than complete words. It still ends up OK, but I am waiting ages to check
that I have been properly recognised.

OO 1.0.1 flies in that respect.

Ian, thank you for using and supporting OOo.

Considering this is a developer build, performance in the latest
release may not have been a priority.

That said, it is good to hear from users about the performance of OOo
on their machine.

At your convenience and interest:

1. Could you please list your hardware specifications:
    CPU ( type, speed )
    Memory

2. Provide us with some metrics:
    Time to load.
    Scroll times.
    Anything else of interest.

Ideally, we need a set of metrics for OOo 1.0.1 and OOo 643C for
comparison.

Also try adjusting the memory settings in

Tools->Options->Memory

Using file from 9684:

PIII, 256MB ram

RH 8.0, OOo 643, Stock memory settings
~3 minutes to load file
Scrolling ( smooth scrolling off ) is jerky when OOo is loading doc
from cache/HD

RH 8.0, OOo 1.0.1, Stock memory settings
~2 minutes 30 seconds to load file
Scrolling ( smooth scrolling off ) is fairly smooth, with minor jerks
when OOo is loading doc from cache/HD

Understood.

Laptop with AMD Duron 700 Processor. ATi Mobility Pro 4Mb Graphics Card

> Memory

256 Mb.

With Quickstarter running and templates opened from Quick Launch toolbar:

Text 1 - 32 Seconds
Text 2 - 3 seconds

Spreadsheet 1 - 12 seconds
Spreadsheet 2 - 3 seconds

Application closed (but quickstarter not closed) between execution of
each task (in above order). Where spreadsheet is the first document
launched, takes about the same as the first text document.

OO1.0.1 Comparison. Quickstarter not running. Documents launched from
start\programs menu.

New Text 1 - 22 secs
New Text 2 - 2 secs

New spreadsheet 1 - 8 secs
Spreadsheet 2 - 2 secs

In broad terms it would appear that 643c takes 50% longer to load than
1.0.1.

> Scroll times.

1 page document - No noticeable lag when scrolling but when dictating
very noticeable. On a 24 page document there can be a delay of up to 10
seconds before there is any noticeable movement from 1 page to another.
The hour glass is visible whilst this is going on.

Memory settings: Cache - 20 Mb
Per Object - 4 Mb

Set to above figures. Also increased the Windows disk cache. No
difference. Neither does reducing colour settings on the graphics card.

Hope you don't mind me sending the attached. It's a doc I took from
the Sun Support Forum. It was originally in .doc format. Trying to
open it in 643c crashed the application. It opened OK in both SO5.2
and OO1.0.1, whence I saved in .sxw format. If you open this in
OO1.0.1 and then in 643c, you will immediately spot the difference.

Hope this helps
