When I type notes and save the document ( whether the focus is within the note 
or not), opening it later does not show any notes at all or only shows the very 
first note that I inserted. The notes margin is enabled. I did notice that when 
I tried reinserting the notes after the first faliure, the box had changed 
colour ( from purple to a pale blue) despite no change in the user data.

Also, the save was done in the .doc format and not .odt. it does not matter 
whether i press Ctrl+S or the icon - the result is the same - the notes do not 
show up after I reopen the saved document.

Cannot reproduce.
Please add a sample odt document.
