Description skelem 2008-10-29 23:17:42 UTC
I have the following directory structure that worked prior to OpenOffice 3.0.

top
  + images
  + test

I would test edit an OO document that had links to images in the images
directory. Occasionally I would rename an image. Then the image doesn't show up
in the OO document, and is replaced with an error message containing the full
path "/home/.../top/image/image1.png" to where the file was, starting at root, "/".

In 3.0, I edited a file in the test directory, linking to images in the images
directory, then moved the test.odt file to the "top" directory. Now, when I open
test.odt, the images in the document are replaced by error messages with the
path to the image altered to "/home/.../top/image1.png".

If, as seems to be the case, that storing path names as relative paths is now
important, then please include an option to store the path as an absolute path,
because it's important to be able to reference a central image repository.

Because of this change, it looks like I now have to replace around 100 links to
the images...manually!

So please uncheck "Tools - Options - Load/Save - General - Save URLs relative to
file system".

Geez. I spent half a day deleting the "bad" links and reinserting my images!
This is a pretty serious change to OO! (Or did I just never notice because I
hadn't moved my file for a while?)

Also, because, in order to set the option under Tools/Options/Load-Save, this
seems like a global setting, whereas, it really should be a global setting with
a per-document override. This way, existing documents won't be wrecked if I
change the setting for a new document, and having another user edit the
document, the file won't suddenly adhere to the other user's setting for this
option.
