Description stl110017 2008-10-04 18:35:52 UTC
This is a name-space conflict with the extention .odm.

OverDrive Media Console is a common application used by public libraries to
distribute audio books and uses the extension .odm

When attempting to download the audio book, after Oo is installed, the download
link brings up OpenOffice, and then cannot do anything with the file.

These is no way to get the file to OverDrive once .odm is bound to OpenOffice.

A quick and easy fix in Windows is to remove .odm from the known extensions
list, then re-install OverDrive. If the user does not use master documents,
this doesn't cause much inconvenience.

I don't know what sort of change to Oo would be possible -- maybe simply
documenting the situation (I hesitate to call it a bug) with the work-around
would be enough.

@stl110017:
If you want to download an audio book and OOo opens up this is a clear
misconfiguration of your browser. Browsers can be reconfigured to open specific
file types with specific applications.

I doubt that there is no other way to get back the OverDrive behaviour than re-
installing OverDrive. It must be possible to reassign OverDrive via folder
settings or one can open an OverDrive media via "Open with...". If the latter
is not possible this is a issue for OverDrive not OOo.

But nevertheless this should be documented in the Wiki.

Everyone can add new FAQ or other pages to the OOo Wiki.
For this issue, I wrote a small FAQ entry at
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/General/How_do_I_change_the_program_that_opens_a_file_that_I_double-click_in_Windows_Explorer%3F

I did change the program associated with .odm files to OverDrive Media Console
but my library downloads still get ported to OOo. I was willing to attempt to
delete the .odm from known extensions but I couldn't figure out how to do
that... tried searching Help for "delete known file extensions" with no luck.
However, reinstalling the OverDrive Media Console seems to have worked.

Still a problem on Macs. Had to uninstall AOO to get Overdrive files to stay as ODM files.
