Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 9432
Make compiled files smaller before distribution.

UPX is an executable packing program that works on many types of executable files. We should consider using it (free under GPL) to compress executables before distribution. I compressed my OpenOffice.org 643 installation on Windows XP to approximately 35% of its original size. This was at best compression. I haven't noticed any side effects. In fact, it seems as if OpenOffice.org loads quicker now. Even if it is deemed that UPX causes an issue with performance, it should be considered for inclusion in pre-distribution compilation and post-installation uncompression. This way the download size is far less.
I don't believe that a realtime packer will result in better compression than other compressors. Furthermore just packing the exe won't help much. Windows XP also provides a compressed file system.
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.
