Description voidmain 2008-07-31 17:55:34 UTC
Not sure if Open Office uses the system default JDK or a shipped JDK, but the
latest beta (v2) seems to not like my JDK. I have the latest version of Apple's
JDK 6 selected as my system default. The error I get says:

"OpenOffide.org requires a Java runtime enviornment (JRE) to perform this task.
The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new
JRE and select it under Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org - Java."

Just noticed that OpenOffice is NOT using the system default JDK and is instead
using the 1.5.0_13 version, which is the latest JDK 5 version from Apple.

Adding the JDK 6 version from Apple, selecting it, and restarting still produces
the same error.

@jl: any input on this ?
Comment 5 Mechtilde 2009-09-08 14:25:57 UTC
does it also happen with version 3.1.1?
Comment 6 voidmain 2009-09-08 15:52:44 UTC
Not really sure as I had to abandon Open Office for almost everything. I'll attempt to download 3.1.1 and
try it at some point.

I met this, too, with 3.x.x, when trying to do Help->Find. I updated JRE (and confirmed that Tools->Options->Open Office->Java knew it) to no avail. Installing 4.1.1 fixed it.

Apparently the old JRE, which had been installed later than 3.x.x, was too new--not defective. "Unexpected or defective" would be a fairer, more informative description. Also the diagnostic's suggested remedy--get a fresh JRE--is incomplete; one may need a fresh Open Office as well.
