Sorry for my bad English :-)
IMHO spaces from icons to text in drop-down menus of OpenOffice application is
too big. I will attach the screenshot of current OpenOffice interval and GIMP
interval as good reference.

I compared 
"AOO 4.0.1   – German UI / German locale  [Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on  German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", “historic”  4.0  User Profile used for all  predecessor versions
with
* Spark  -   More or less same distance
* Gimp   -   Indeed has smaller distance

* Seamoney - Similar to AOO
* EditPad  - Similar to Gimp
* LibO     - Like AOO
* VLC Player - Like AOO

I can't tell whether there is a recommendation.
I prefer Gimp viewing, but may be other users prefer AOO viewing?

I prefer less space → smaller menus.
