Description nedrichards 2002-11-02 16:10:59 UTC
Currently when you unzip an OOo tarball you get a directory full off f___ files
and setup.exe/setup program. If you renamed all of the f___ files to have names
after se... in the alphabet then setup would be at the top and much easier to find.

I've had quite a few problems with people unable to find setup.exe because there
are so many other files in the directory.

er, alphabet failiure. that would be sf...

sorry.

The first thought I've had when I read this issue is: He is kidding. I
don't think that your idea is real nonsense, but every platform has a
filemanager and 'sort options'. If someone can't find setup.exe
because he doesn't know the sort options of his tools he needs a crash
course of his OS.
Falko, please decide.
Comment 3 nedrichards 2002-11-04 12:09:04 UTC
Firstly, I'm not kidding, just thinking about the little things. Yes
we are dealing with people who need a crash course on their OS. But
the thing is, they don't know that and *will blame us*. In the end it
just comes down to whether we want to make things easier for users or
if our current systems are 'good enough'.

Another possible solution would be to rename setup.exe to
install.exe, that would put it quite early in the default sort order
although it may cause problems elsewhere. (ie rewriting documentation)

I'm not sure how easy these changes would be to do but on users@ and
webmasters@ we quite frequently get people who have real difficulties
in installing the application. This is for them, not us.

I assume "fs" should have been "ft" when changing the ownership - I am
not Falco :)
Comment 5 eric.savary 2003-04-16 15:38:37 UTC
Set to "NEW"

this must be really easy to fix. Just substitute "f" in the filename
with "x", that's it. I've also heard about people that couldn't find
the setup.exe file.
Comment 8 falko.tesch 2003-09-12 12:19:25 UTC
Frankly spoken:
It is _not_ easy (think of updates, patches etc.) and for download it
is anyway a selfextracting, setup-auto-starting biggie-file and when
coming in little chunks it is on CD with a start routine.

Won't be fixed, for OOo 2.0 we have cab f.iles
Comment 13 Olaf Felka 2005-08-15 08:30:12 UTC
