Oh, and can we set it up so we can track how many people we send to their site?
I'll play around to see where to add it to the homepage, and see if we can track people. -louis
done. I think that the gif fits at best awkwardly with the current setup. If we are planning on routinely placing gifs, I can configure the page to accommodate them. If not, then each will look more or less awkward. I've asked Kat to see about tracking click activity. -louis
Couldn't you set up a bogus URL like http://www.openoffice.org/oscon, which automatically refers to the oreilly site? Then we could see the number in the referral site.
I asked Kat about referral numbers. She seems to think that the web stats reporting service already has a reporting service that addresses this point. louis
Could you check to make sure, please?
reassign
yes; of course. The redirection is a possibility I don't have the greatest confidence in. So: we also investigated your option, which has the virtue of simplicity. But, basically, for any option that we could use right now, a simple cgi script needs to be written (or deployed). To this end, I asked one of our web dev. people to work on it and initiated an issue with a high priority. This should be taken care of tomorrow (Friday). -louis
This is done. I created a target page within the OOo family of pages to which the visitor who clicks is sent. She is then sent to the O'Reilly page via a "redirect" mechanism. This way, we can track user traffic. It is, of course, what you first suggested.... the only problem is that it is a more or less imperfect solution, as when they go to the O'Reilly site, they cannot easily return to OOo; they'll hit the redirect page. So, I'm working on making the perfect solution, which requires a programmer to do, though it is trivial. Since we are moving to Scast in a few weeks, it might have to wait until then. A second point: the O'Reilly page is currently unavailable. The problem is theirs, not ours, and I notified their webmaster. am closing this issue but will remind our Ops about it; there's a collab issue addressing that point, which I am keepiong alive. -louis
As agreed with Louis, we can close all the resolved fixed issues he owns.
