Spell checker does not suggest words with danish characters
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
Spell checker does not suggest words with danish characters, such as æ, ø or å. It recognizes the words while checking, but never suggests the very same words!
Tl->Kevin: I pass this one on to you. Can it be that the correct words with those characters are not in the dictionary list? Or may it be a text encoding problem?
The words that Writer does not suggest is indeed in the dictionary. I tested it by misspelling several words with Danish characters in it, and it never came up with a single suggestion with a Danish character in it. As I stated, it DOES recognize the words from the dictionary when it spellchecks, but it does not suggest words with Danish characters, ever. Example - the Danish word for fool is 'fæ'. In the following sentence "Er du et fæ, dit fu ??" 'fæ' was recognized by the spell checker, but 'fu' was not and thus underlined with a red line. I pressed F7 and it did not suggest 'fæ'. This is just one example, I have tested it with all kinds of words and all kinds of light and severe misspellings. Another test (with the Danish word for bitch: kælling) "Hej kælling, din dumme kalling." Kælling is recognized and accepted, kalling not, and it does not suggest kælling. I tested words with æ, ø and å, all with the same result. :-(
And another IMPORTANT issue here: When suggesting words, Writer sometimes does like in this example: The word "Problemformulering" is not recognized and then Writer suggests "Problem formulering". It should NEVER do this at least in Danish, Microsoft Word did it for years because a common error in Danish is to write words consisting of two words In two words: When you in English you write "spell checker", the Danish word spell checker is just one word: spellchecker. We have big problems here with people separating the words because they read so much English and get confused. Microsoft Words approach is that is NEVER suggests taking the words apart, but that autocorrect should take care of commonly misspelled words.
Hi, Please contact the author of the Daish dictionary directly. The problem is not in OOo code, it is in the Danish dictionary. For example: To control the suggestion mechanism, you can set the "TRY" string that is found in the affix file (.aff) to tell OOo spellchecker which characters can be inserted or used to replace other characters in a word to form suggestions. So find the da_dk.aff fileand use a text editor and add the characters you think are missing to the "TRY" string in that file (and/or file a bug report with the Danish dictionary author). As for splitting into compound words into two words, that will happen unless the dictionary author decides to enable compound word support. Hope this helps, Kevin
Hi, Thanks, it certainly helped. I have contacted the authors directly!
