Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 87304
Add row/column info to number values in 'Insert Table' scheme opened from Toolbar Icon
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:44:22 UTC
In OOo writer, OOo displays information about numbers of rows and columns on the button, this is very inconvenient when going just out of screen, would be handy to go outside screen for making a table larger than you can see but still have control and feetback over it. In Maths (in Europe) we learn that in a table first the number of rows is mentioned and then the number of columns. OOo does this the other way around. (Start writer and click on the button to make a new table and play a little bit graphically.) For people who haven't seen it yet, if you have the insert toolbar and the table button there is a little arrow in the icon, to go to the way I'm mentioning. You have to click the arrow. Just to be sure it would be a very good idea to mention the words "rows" and "columns" just behind or before the numbers.
Mayby this is something to add in ODF 1.2 .
Created attachment 81848 [details] Screenshots showing problem and possible solution Still Reproducible with server installation of "AOO 4.1.0-Dev – English UI / German locale - [AOO410m1(Build:9750) - Rev. 1536316 - 2013-10-30]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", own separate user profile.: 1. Open new Writer document from AOO start center 2. In Standard Toolbar long click on "Insert Table" icon > Table scheme with few rows and columns and "Cancel" footer appears 3. Move mouse pointer somewhere into the table sheme > Table area will be highlighted, "Columns x Rows" in footer below table scheme Problem: for large tables "54 x 55" it's not clear whether that means "54 rows x 55 columns" or "54 columns x 55 rows" Possible solutions: (a) a small graphic icon nearby the numbers illustrating whether number means number of rows or number of columns. (b) Text information "54 columns x 55 rows". Desadvantage: localization related minimum size of table scheme required
Attachment shows situation in Writer, corresponding solution required for Draw and Impress
The solution can be made better visible if you use a simple horizontal and vertical stick with the numbers. The sticks need to look distinct from the numbers as not to confuse them with being part of the numbers though. Would just adding the text "row" and "column" with the numbers be a good solution?
