Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 8680
openoffice writer crashes upon opening a Word document
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
When I open a certain MS word document and scroll down a bit to a certain figure, it crashes openoffice horribly. Not only openoffice crashes, but it brings down my whole desktop and I have to re-login with all my other works lost. I would like to attach the file which causes this problem, but stange enough, I can't find any way to attach files from your web page ! Also, your system of reporting bug is quite complex since one has to register first and ask for an account. I would not coimtemplating reporting a minor bug, but this one is really serious.

Thank you for using and supporting OOo. If possible please check to see if this problem exists when using developer build 643. Unable to duplicate on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OOo 643. Unable to duplicate on RH 8.0, OOo 643.
I am sorry. This problem seems go occur _only on my machine_ and it occurs in fact for several other MS Word documents as well. I am running openoffice on debian, using the debian package at http://ftp.freenet.de/pub/ftp.vpn-junkies.de/openoffice/ My machine is running the 'sarge' (or testing) release while the other run woody (stable) so I thought the problem may be due to that, but I have just upgraded a machine to sarge to see if it gets the same problem but no, it works. The main difference which I can think of is X. In fact the crash seem to occur for docmuments with graphics. My machine has a graphic matrox G550 card, which is only supported by XFree-4.2 and therefore I have the XFree-4.2 server installed. It may also be a memory problem (?) because I have DDR RAM instead of SDRAM I am still investigating why the problem occurs only on my machine. It is unfortunate that this is a fast machine but I can't run openoffice, while the other are too slow for a big package as this. If you have a clue, plese let me know.
Consider using the stock OOo build from OpenOffice.org Try checking or posting to the Debian mailing lists for additional clues. I doubt issue 8011 is related to your issue, but it never hurts to take a look for fun.
CIndeed with stock OOo build from OpenOffice.org (1.0.1) it no longer crashes systematically, but still crashes from time to time. But this thing is unreproducible, so I guess I have to live with that.
This task is fixed or worked in OOo 1.1 beta2.
