Description heavy 2002-10-23 15:42:58 UTC
I was working on my presentation, saving regularly and OpenOffice crashed for
some reason of the other. I reloaded OpenOffice to continue working on my
presentation and it crashes while loading the file. I tried to load it under
WinXP and Linux (Redhat 8.0), but it crashes in both cases.

This is a little discouraging since we tend to believe that we are "safe" if we
save our work, but if we cannot trust that the saved file can be reloaded, it
makes me very apprehensive about using OO for serious work.

Is there any way to debug the loading of the document so I can try to get back
my work?

I would like to attach the sxi file so you could see what is happening, but I
don't see any way to do this.

Richard, thank you for using and supporting OOo.

There is a link "Create a new attachment" where you can attach your
file.

A few things to note:

1 Unfortunately we cannot help you recover your data. IZ and the
QA team focus only on reviewing and isolating bug reports.

2 If OOo crashed, there could be a chance your file got corrupted
   during the crash.

What we need is more details on how OOo crashed. Ideally this
   should be reproducible.

3 The best way to ensure data integrity regardless of the
application is to make another copy of your document at
regular intervals, in addition to saving regularly.

The corrupted file
Comment 3 heavy 2002-10-26 09:03:20 UTC
I attached the corrupted Impress file.

I believe I have figured out how it became corrupt and it is
repeatable on my system for both Windows and Linux. I opened up two
presentations and switched to "slide view" so that I could select
slides from one presentation and copy them into the other.

The copied slides appeared correctly in the target presentation, but
after saving the presentation it was no longer possible to open the
file into which I copied the slides -- OpenOffice crashes while trying
to load it. I was able to repeat this.

Perhaps it is a known problem.

Richard, thanks for the great feedback.

Can you attach the 2 files we need to reproduce this problem. Once I
get the 2 files you used to reproduce this problem, I'll run a check
on the test boxes.

Thanks again.

The target presentation for the copied files
Comment 7 heavy 2002-10-27 16:06:09 UTC
I attached the two files. This is how I recreate the problem:

Open the test.sxi presentation, then open the source presentation.
Switch into "slide view" on the source presentation and select all
slides and right-click and press "Copy".

Go into the first presentation and switch into "slide view" and
right-click over the background and click "Paste". Now save the target
presentation...it may cause OO to crash at this point, but it may be
successful too.
Comment 8 heavy 2002-10-27 16:06:45 UTC
In my attachment notes, that should say "slides" and not "files".
Comment 9 prgmgr 2002-10-27 16:09:24 UTC
Thanks again Heavy.

A few more questions:

1 Do I need to copy any slides in particular?

I guess if you could tell us/me exactly which slides to copy
   it would help us/me out.

2 How should I answer the dialog box:

"The format of the pages will be adapted. Do you want to
    adapt the objects too?"

Doing a quick check, I could not duplicate the problem using Win NT
4.0 SP6a, OOo 643.
Comment 10 heavy 2002-10-27 16:19:54 UTC
Regarding which slides to copy, I just selected them all and copied
them into the target presentation.

Regarding whether or not to adapt the format, it didn't ask me
this...is this perhaps related to the template file? I could attach
the template if it is necessary too.

I could try to install the latest developer build and see if I can
recreate it with that version too, I am using 1.0.1.
Comment 12 prgmgr 2002-10-27 16:24:46 UTC
Okay, I can duplicate with the user supplied target file ( test.sxi ).

Need to figure out what in test.sxi is causing the problem.

I don't have a problem cutting and pasting the entire source (
20020405_oscar_objectweb.sxi ) presentation into a new blank
presentation.
