When I enter a trivial formula containing something like 'vec b', the vector arrow above the b is 
so high that another letter would almost fit in between. So the resulting display is more than 
twice the height of the 'b'.

This is a known & already fixed in 643 (a developer build). It'll be
fixed in the next stable version as well. For more information see
