Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 8429
widevec and s.th. like that is shown as rectangle or question mark
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:56:26 UTC
I use a PC with Win98. I have installed build 643 and had already installed SO5.2 and OOo1.0.1. Now in 643 I write a formular in the writer modul using the formular editor. But widevec or brackets are only shown as rectangles. When I open the same document in OOo1.0.1 arrow and the brackets are shown, but have the known error that the arrow is wrong placed, high above the letter. Then I fetched somewhere that it is due to the font starsymb.ttf. But that font was not installed on my PC. Next step: I found a CD with the trial-version of SO6.0. I extracted the starsymb.ttf and installed it. When I now open the document in 643, I no longer get rectangles but now I get question marks instead of arrow and brackets. When I now open the document in OOo1.0.1, the arrow ist well placed. I guess OOo should be usable without installing some font coming with SO and therefore this bug should be fixed. kind regards Regina Henschel
Looks like two issues combined. So you tested that the fix for issue 3780 (arrow to high) for OOo 1.0.1 works as expected, but this does not fix your issue when applied to build 643. As you stated, the "squares" in your build 643 is not the same issue as in 3780 with OOo 1.0.1, which is the reason why it does not fix it. Possibly you see "squares" instead of symbols because the font opens____.ttf (openSymbol.ttf) is also missing. Can you please check that and report ? You first need openSymbol.ttf. If this font is missing you will see the "squares" (i just tested that). Then, if and ONLY if you still have the bug of #issue 3780 then you also need starSymbol.ttf. -- MK
But you said you also got the bug of issue 3780 for OOo 1.0.1, in which case you are likely to have the font OpenSymbol installed. Else you would have seen the "squares" in OOo 1.0.1 too instead of just experiencing issue 3780 Pewh... In which case this could mean your build 643 can not access the font OpenSymbol. When you tested OOo 1.01, were you working under the same operating system as for build 643 right ? -- Holmes :-)
If there are question marks displayed in the formula (at least if they are displayed head over) these are the the representations of parser errors in your formula. Please state the formulas text or provide the formula as attachement for this bug then we may have a look at it.

Before I reported this bug, I checked that die openSymbol.ttf is correctly installed. I know sometimes win98 doesn't find it, so I explizit add it. I think, that OOo1.0.1 renders the formular, shows, that the font is indead correctly installed. All tests I made under Win98. I made some sreenshots with the formular vec ab widevec ab vec (ab) widevec (ab) newline vec ab widevec ab ( vec ab ) ( widevec ab ) (as mentioned in issue3780) and attached the gifs. All tests have the opensymbol installed but differ whether the starsymb is installed or not.
TL->HDU: Seems to be a font matching problem.
I noticed more problems with the fonts. The bug is not only in formula but occurs in normal text with normal fonts. Special characters are often not shown right. I made a picture where you can see it. Again it is the same text opened in OOo1.0.1 and in 643, OpenSymbol and StarSymbol are installed, my system is a win98 in german.

Yes, we are using a different API call between 641 and 643 to allow complex text layout. The problem is that W98 isn't designed to do much unicode processing. The latest internal builds of SRX643 have some of the problems fixed but to make it work 100% reliably we will have to work around most of W98 text API completely. The fixes for SRX643 should get into the next respin of OOo643.
Set to higher priority, P2.
HDU->IH: On OO1.1beta we now need the OpenSymbol with the fixed CMAP.
IH: new Opensymbol font with corrected CMAP tables checked in.
Not fixed in apps01
IH: this problem is fixed with the new version of OpenSymbol
IH: closed
