Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 84243
Large odg freezes office on PDF-export with lossless compression
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:31:14 UTC
Hi, - I have a large odg - PDF-export with lossless compression makes office freeze. With JPEG compression 100% the export goes fine ... I'll be glad to send the odg.
TM->HI: please have a look, thanks !
I've exported an 85 pages impress file to pdf in both mode without any problem. Please provide a sample where it is reproducible, Thanks.
HI->THB: It seems that we have a performance problem with transparent objects. The PDF-Export does not freeze but it takes over 1 minute to finish the job. I'll forward the bugdoc to you by mail.
Thanks for the info. At my system, it looked as a freeze, with 5 minutes waiting or so without visible progress.
@pl: could you have a look, please?
The document uses a transparent gradient. That gradient is prepared for the PDF as a large bitmap (so it looks the same as on the display). If you use "lossless compression", then this bitmap is prepared for 300 dpi instead of 72 dpi. This increases the data involved by a factor of 17, also CPU cycles. Since also memory usage increases you will also more easily into swapping. You can e.g. see this when you disable compression wholesale, then a 583 MB file is produced (the gradient actually compresses very well). So there is no actual bug here. pl->sj: this is the handling of META_FLOAT_TRANSPARENT action in filter/source/pdf/pdfexport.cxx. I don't know if we perhaps should tweak that somehow ?
