The database application ("base") chrashed when I close the "edit table" or
"report" window. This is independend if I actually have done any edits and if it
is a ODBC/MySQL table or a locally stored database/table I had opened. Other
windows seem to work. The actual change is saved but the crash prevents any
further work on the database what is quite annoying... (need to restart programm
for each such change or just viewing the table / report data)

Please update to 2.3 and test again.

Which OS do you use?
Which Java version do you use?
Do you use 32-bit or 64 bit version of the software?

I am using Centos5 64 bit. OO Version 2.3 is currently not available for Centos5
/ RHEL 5. I tried the rpm from the webpage but this is only 32bit and fails to
start after installation. JRE is 1.6u3

You could try using the x86_64 RPM files
