Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 8086
OpenOffice.org Open/Save dialog does not work with Shortcuts.
Last modified: 2003-11-10 11:16:12 UTC
Hi, I thought I would start reporting bugs I find so this is my first report. Select Tools, General and tick the Use OpenOffice.org dialogs. Now from say Writer Select File, Open and select a shortcut. (I always put shortcuts in the My Documents folder the quickly allow me to get to drives or my favourite directories.) In my case this is F Drive.lnk which is my shortcut to the F: drive on the server. I now try to open the F Drive.lnk file name. This now opens the Filter Selection screen. I hope this helps. Whilst I cannot code in C/C++ I can provide assistance by feeding back bugs.
Thank you for using and supporting OOo. Marking as a duplicate of 4306. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 4306 ***
Hi, Firstly keep up the good work. It is too easy for us to forget how much work you are doing. I don't believe this issue is the same as 4306 (although it may be part of the same functionality) or has been resolved. In order to test this I just down loaded OO1.0.1 to see if this issue had been resolved. It has not. The bug is a minor issue as I doubt anyone would use the OpenOffice dialogues, but they might. The important thing to note with this is the use of the OpenOffice.org Open dialogues and not the standard Windows Open dialogues. Please review again.
Moved to ui as this is probably where it belongs. Kelvin
I can verify this under various windows platforms - P h i l l

Hi, I just thought I would point out this is not a duplicate of 4306. 4306 is about the file name being displayed as 'C Drive.lnk' in the case of a shortcut to the C drive. The problem I raised is that double clicking on this link simply does not work. Thus shortcuts under the OpenOffice.org dialog does not work. This makes these dialogs next to useless for the Windows user who quickly adds shortcuts to move to various local folders or network shares. The information in 4306 implies the shortcut works. It does not under Windows XP. In the comparison with Windows Media Player at least with Media Player if you double click on the shortcut or click on Open it goes to where the shortcut points. I am reopening this issue as this issue indicates a non functioning dialog with a standard Windows feature. The issue 4306 simply is about the shortcut appearing as a file name which in itself is a bit untidy. I don't consider this to be a major issue as the current OpenOffice.org dialog only offers one significant feature (the ability to one click to the Home folder) but offers a very vanilla and less than helpful user interface to handle files. IMHO it could be much much more. The standard of the standard Windows dialog is an order of magnitude better than the OpenOffice.org dialog. For completeness the following are shortcomings of the OO dialog. - Little differentiation of icons to assist the user - No ability to go the the standard My Documents folder or Desktop unless the Home button is set to one of these - The 'Up one level' button when held down displays folders in the reverse order than the user expects (although this design is usually acceptable to technical people, it is not something general users feel comfortable with.) - The 'Up one level' button when held down does not label the equivalent of the My Computer disk symbol so the user has no idea what is going on. I hope this helps clarify the issue. Kelvin
lnk-files are windows-explorer application specific (url-)files like bookmarks in Netscape. Those links are handled by the MS-Windows own file-open dialog. The staroffice- or openoffice file-open dialog therefore is designed to handle all "real" types of files within the file-system and not url like links. So this one is not a defect buut might be a wish for an enhancement.
Hi, I thought I would change this to a request for enhancement. I have just noticed the inability to handle Windows shortcuts within parts of OpenOffice.org is starting to become a nuisance for me as a Windows user. In addition to the Open/Save dialog the following is another example. File -> New -> Templates & Documents Clicking on My Documents and having Windows shortcuts to go to other drives or network drives is very very handy and does not work. Thus there is no easy way to jump between the local My Documents area and a network drive where shared templates or documents may exist. Whilst it is possible to set the path for My Documents to the network drive, it is then not possible to easily get back to the local My Documents area on the local machine. So this is a bit of an either/or situation. Thanks for listening. Kelvin
TM->BH: Please have a look, thanks !
