Description Unknown 2002-10-01 11:59:12 UTC
I have recently installed OpenOffice 1.0.1 and am a novice user - please excuse
me if this problem is due to finger problems.

I am using Windows 98 Release 2 with a HP Pavilion 233 equipped with 192 MB RAM.

When attempting to activate the format/character/font effects/ tab OO generally:

1. Experiences an unrecoverable error and restarts (if a document is open the
document can be recovered).

2. In some cases result (1) is followed by a Soffice indication that "This
program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down"

I suspect that this problem is probably at my end (since it would be expected
that such fundamental features would function) but was unable to find any
earlier reference to this issue within IssueZilla of FAQ.

Thank you for any assistance (or direction to other information/assistance)
that you can provide.

Thank you for using and supporting OOo.

Is this a reproducible problem? If so, could you please list the
steps to consistently reproduce this issue?

Response below for two scenarios (A and B).

A.	No OO document open, after opening/closing various
applications but first launch of OO, dial-up connection, Microsoft
Outlook, McAfee virus scan and ZoneAlarm firewall active:

1.	Launch OO
2.	Select "text document" and "Open"
3.	Select "Format" menu tab
4.	Select "Character" menu tab
5.	Select "Font Effects" menu tab
6.	Receive OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 message "An unrecoverable error
has occurred"
7.	Select "OK"
8.	Receive Soffice message "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down."
9.	Select "Details"

10.	Select "Close"
11.	Receive repeat item 8 message.
12.	Select "Close" and OO application terminates. Windows 98
remains active and (apparently) fully functional.

B.	Immediately after cold boot - shut down McAfee viris scan and
ZoneAlarm firewall ("Start-up" applications):

1.	Launch OO
2.	Select "text document" and "Open"
3.	Select "Format" menu tab
4.	Select "Character" menu tab
5.	Select "Font Effects" menu tab
6.	Receive OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 message "An unrecoverable error
has occurred"
7.	Select "OK"
8.	Receive Soffice message "This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down."
9.	Select "Close"
10.	Receive repeat item 8 message.
11.	Select "Close" and OO application terminates. Windows 98
remains active and (apparently) fully functional.

In

Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org/View

please try disabling:

Preview in fonts list
Comment 4 Unknown 2002-10-17 10:34:11 UTC
Disabling <<Preview in fonts list>> made no difference. The problem
exhibited the same characteristics described previously.

If possible can you check to see if this problem still exists in the
643 developer build?

Does disabling font history resolve this issue?
