This has had to be "rescued" several times, and it sort of came good enough to convert to WORD.. but copy a few more web pages into it and it should lock up completely again. (210.66 KB, application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text)

Description callmeshane 2007-07-21 04:43:54 UTC
In summary: I use mainly OO Write and Draw. the major problem I find with it is
it's general instability in regards to either converting (the Write) or in the
production of what I would regard in terms of Microsoft Word, to be NOT very
substantial documents or graphics.

I have to draft documents that may be 200 pages long. I usually do this in MS
Word 2000 - simply because it's reliable and stable.

Some are more or less plain text and some are a combination of text and graphics.

I usually limit them to 200 pages or 60Meg simply on the basis of "work-ability
and the system slow down that comes with size"

I find that when I convert even insubstantial documents from MS Word, into OO
Write, that with simple text only documents - the OO Write collapses around the
60 page mark, and it goes completely haywire with the formatting, layout etc.,
on 10 page documents that include tables and graphics.

I also find that when I produce documents directly in OO Write, that they become
unstable and begin to freeze / lock up / crash when they either become large in
terms of plain text around say 25 pages, or they are combinations of text,
graphics and varied formatting - that they collapse and crash at about 10 + pages.

For instance, last night I was compiling a document, made of copy and paste's
from websites, on how to wire up an electric guitar.

Got to about 10 pages... "Foomph" - not working... and 4 or 5 restores?? later I
got it up and running... and then I had to convert it to Word 2000, because I
know that I can build up substantial documents say perhaps to 120 pages, before
the program usually gets to large for my computer to easialy process.

The same or similar effects occour in OO Draw, when a number of pages or slides
are open and or there is a variety of graphics in the drawings.

To finalise this; I really like this software, but I find that beyond either
very simple, small and basic documents and graphics, it becomes unstable and
locks up, crashes and becomes unusable.

The best mental image I can come up with is that the OO software is like having
a small car...

It's absolutely great... put in 2 people and a bit of shopping.. it's fantastic...

But put 4 200Kg sumo wrestlers inside it... put 2 more in the boot, put 2 more
on the bonnet and put 3 or 4 on the roof... and you have got big problems...

That car ain't gonna go very well and it ain't gonna handle very well....

MS Word 2000 handles nearly all my work with comparative ease and reliablity,
and yet even a fraction of this - causes OO Write and Draw to bust a gut and
fall over.

I am quite happy to send samples of some of my work where I have encountered
these problems.

I'd really like to see this software improve to the point that it is rock solid
and reliable.

I'd like it to become truck like software instead remaining small car software.

If you want to email me I will be happy to upload a couple of ODT and ODG files
to whoever asks for them

Regards

Shane

Please be more detailed about your system and your office. Which OOo version are
you using exactly? 2.0 is pretty outdated version 2.2.1 is the current version.
What system are you using?

For the file "Steamer.odg" I can confirm the problems. The file contains several
3D-scenes. These are grouped; ungrouping them doesn't solve the problem.

Each action on the page, like click on an object or scrolling, raises CPU to
100% so long that working is not possible. This occurs independent of OpenGL
checked or not. The performance is also bad in StarOffice 7.

I use German OOo2.2.1 on WinXP with AMD Athlon 1.15GHz and 1GB RAM and NVIDIA
GeForce3 Ti 200.

Perhaps this issue should be split to drawing for the attached odg document and
word pocessor for the other?

The child task for Draw is http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79859.

With respect to Writer, I could not reproduce the problem with the provided
file. Nevertheless, there are indeed many issues lately describing OOo Writer
instability. I am experiencing similar problems (maybe not always the same, but
still a lot of problems) with various files (using OOo 2.2.1). See e.g. issues:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=79346 and

SBA: About the Writer part... Duplicate of issue 73788.
Some details:The problem is the linked graphics (Load document, via menu Edit -
Links".
Depending on the systems internet connection, their reload may take a while,
blocking the use of Writer. This was solved in issue 73788 (integrated in
developer build 680m222, thus fixed for OOo 2.3).

Workaround for OOo 2.2.1:
 - Load document
 - Edit - Links
 - select all links
 - click "break links"
 - click OK
 - Save document.
-> Done. Now the graphics are embedded in the document and do not have to get
reloaded over and over again.
