Description johanhenselmans2 2007-07-03 22:46:07 UTC
I just heard from a developer that they used a windowless Open Office-X11 app to do some kind of
mail-merge to print automatically, without interference of the user. He really hopes to get that same
functionality in the Aqua version of Open Office.

I would propose an enhancement that would go further, by exposing objects via Services and
Applescript.

Services are parts of your own program that you expose to other programs. If you look under the
services menu under the application name's menu, you might find some stuff over there. The nice thing
about it is that you can very simpel expose functions in your application to do stuff for other apps.

See: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/SysServices/index.html

I use them quite a lot, with (for instance wordservice.service from http://www.devon-
technologies.com/download/index.html, that gives you the possibility to capitalize words, sentence
etc.

Making Open Office Applescriptable would do the same via a programming interface. The nice thing
about it would be that this would make it possible to use OpenOffice via Automator to do all kind of
nifty things.

adding keyword.

The same feature that your developer has mentioned should be available in the Aqua version. Can you
please ask him to check it works?

Services, automator and AppleScript are future planned enhancements as part of the further integration
work with Mac OS X. These won't be completed until later.
