Description Unknown 2002-09-21 18:40:50 UTC
When using subscripts in formulas, the subscript is spaced too wide, or far
apart from the variable being subscripted. The result looks very
unprofessional. I have observed this problem with many different fonts, and it
appears to be caused by the fact that kerning is not performed in the rendering
of formulas. This appears to be evidenced by the fact that the subscript is
placed after the right side of the variable's bounding box, as shown in the
linked image:

http://home.earthlink.net/~crobc/oo-bug/new.f-sub.spacing.png

It would be very difficult at this point to produce passable scientific and
mathematical documents for publication with OO.org with the present lack of
control over the spacing of subscripts from variables in the formula editor.
Hopefully this limitation can be be eliminated through some enhancement.

The problem is worse when you change the default Times font used by
OpenOffice for equations. I was using Times New Roman, and the
spacing is very large with this font.

Still, the lack of kerning in equations (it appears this is the root
of the problem) perhaps coupled with some other bugs in the equation
rendering code such as indicated in issue 9777, cause OOo to render
poor quality subscript spacing in general.

Please try using the latest OpenOffice 1.1 Final , you can download it from
www.openoffice.org
many bug fixes and enhancements since your version and 1.1 Final . If the
problem still happend in 1.1 please report back. or try OOo 1.1.1a (not final
version yet)
It maybe not yet solve your Issue, but it worth to try.

and Feel free to reopen it again.
Long time no activity, old version, no further comment, worksforme

This issue needs to be reopened. It was not solved, and I suspect that it is
related to issue 9202.

The subscripts appear very far from variables, which seriously effects the usage
of OpenOffice for papers and patent-applications.
