Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 7568
Application crashes when saving a document (network install only)
Last modified: 2003-09-08 16:56:16 UTC
The application crashes whenever I try to save a document. As soon as I click on the "save" button I get an error and the application crashes.
Don, thanks for taking the time to post this issue. Do you have any error logs you can send us? What is the exact error message that you see? Are you trying to save to a Windows Share/UNC drive? Can you list the steps we need to follow to reproduce this error? I know it's a lot of questions, but we need more information to help us determine and reproduce your problem.
- No, I haven't found any error logs in both local and network installation directories (I looked for .log files and I only found setup.log) - The error I get is "An unrecoverable error has occurred. All files have been saved and will probably be restored at the next startup" (I'm using a localized version so I'm not sure this is the actual english version of the message, but I'm confident you'll get the idea). - I tried to save to both a local and a network volume and I got the same error message. - I followed these steps to get the error: 1. I installed Openoffice on the domain server with the -net argument 2. I installed it on a workstation by double clicking on the OpenOffice Setup link located in the network volume 3. I started the application and tried to save a new file, at this point I got the error. Please note that it occured in all the applications of the suite, not only the Wordprocessor. I hope this helps. Thanks for being there, Don
I will confirm this issue, all suite app.s give error upon any "save" / "save as" command. Configuration: Server is NT 4.0 SP6. Extracted win32_install.zip to E:\install. Ran 'setup.exe /net' to E:\Program Files\OOo101. Completed ok. Shared folder as \\PSNT1\OOo101. Client is Win98SE. Mapped above share to K:. Opened MS-DOS prompt at K:\program. Ran 'setup' to C:\Program Files\OOo101. Completed ok. Open Writer OR Calc OR Draw, add dummy content to Untitled1. Try File - Save OR Save As, to any local drive or shared drive. Get "unrecoverable error..." dialog. When app recycles, if file is recovered, changes are lost. Glad to provide any further detail as needed.
Hi, Stefan... I have a very clear and obvious cause for my version of this problem. In my prior comment, I said the 'shared' install was on the server's E:\<path_to_OOo>. That got mapped as the K:\ drive root on the client. After the local install completed, most of the "Tools - Options - General - Paths" entries, the ones that refer to shared directories, had paths like "E:\<path_to_oo>". Since my client system has those folders on K:, things blow up. I manually edited all paths to chage E:<path> to K:, and everything's fine. I'm clueless beyond that point, but it looks like a relatively strightforward modification of the local setup behavior. Hope all this helps.
Ok, I jumped the gun. After I corrected my path settings yesterday, the save function worked once. When I started working this morning, same problem again. I'm clueless again, but still working on it.
Just a quick check Howard and Don. It sounds like both of you have performed a multi-user install and then performed a local workstation install. When you start OOo, are you using soffice.exe that is installed on the local workstation, not on the server?
I use the one on the server. Besides... there's no soffice.exe on the local machine!
Don, you should perform a multi-user install on the server, then run a local workstation install on the local workstation. After OOo is installed properly, you will have an installation of OOo on the server, and a "mini" install on the workstation. When you launch OOo on the workstation, you will run soffice.exe from the local HD not the server HD. Consider reviewing the multi-user setup procedures for Windows in: http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide/index.html
Don, I'm going to close this for now. I'm fairly confident that OOo will work if you first install using a multi-user setup and then do a second install on the local machine via the "workstation install". Thanks again for using and supporting OOo.
As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved <wontfix/duplicate/worksforme/invalid> issues. Please see this posting for details. First step in IssueZilla is unfortunately to set them to verified.
