Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 74111
Writer hangs (in a certain warning dialog) when opening a *.ott with special path settings
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:20:11 UTC
I am running OpenOffice 2.1 on Windows XP SP2. In the word processor, I saved a blank document (with customized styles and formatting) to mydoc.ott (OpenOffice text template). Then, click File, Open. Select the mydoc.ott. Click Open button. The Open dialog disappears and the word processor apparently hangs (no more screen updates). The Windows task manager reports that OpenOffice is "not responding" and it shows soffice.bin as consuming a majority of CPU cycles for several minutes (before I killed it). This is reproducible. If there's a way for me to attach the .ott file, I would. Thanks.
Created attachment 42657 [details] Opening this .ott file causes Writer to hang.
Cannot repoduce the problem wih OO 2.1 or OO 2.2 on my WinXP. Do you have the Font "Georgia" installed on your system? Does the the "progress bar" (in the status bar) appear before OO freezes?
The font "Georgia" is installed on my system. Some more details: After I click the "Open" button, the Open dialog disappears. A new window opens with a gray background. It has the OpenOffice icon in the left corner of the title bar but the title is blank. At the bottom of this window, the status bar appears, "Loading document", and the progress bar progresses from left to right very quickly. Then the status bar disappears. After a very long pause (several minutes), a dialog opens asking me to choose an import filter for file "a1.wps" (filename doesn't matter except that it's the first file in My Documents). I select one and click OK. Then the same dialog opens asking me to choose an import filter for file "a2.doc". Maybe this will continue for every single file in My Documents. Ok, I know now the workaround: I removed My Documents from the Paths for Templates (in Tools / Options). Having done this, I can open "My Documents\mydoc.ott" without any delay. I still consider this a bug. I would like to store my templates in a directory that contains other non-template files. But I would also like my templates to show up in the New / Templates and Documents dialog. It seems to me that OpenOffice should not try to look at these non-template files in My Documents when showing me the New dialog or opening a specific template. But I could be wrong...
Confirming with OO 2.1 on WinXP - 1. Make sure that you have all kinds of files in "My Documents", not just those that can be opened by OO. 2. Start Writer, click Tools, Options, OO.o, Paths, d-click Templates, click Add, navigate to "My Documents" and click OK, OK, OK. 3. Save "mydoc.ott" to "My Documents", start Writer, click File, Open, navigate to "My Documents" and open "mydoc.ott". OO seems to be trying to open all (or at least some) files in My Documents, which causes "Choose Filter" dialog to appear. Correction - I was able to reproduce this only once, on further attempts file opened just fine (sometimes with slight delay).
I also achieved it to see the problem - but also only once... it happened when I opened a write-protected document, clicked the "Edit" button and opened it as template for a new document. It is quite sure that the problem is connected to the settings in the "Options.Path" dialog. OO tries to access files that it is not able to interpret. I will have further looks how to get this reproducible more than once a year...
The bug only occurred once for me also. The reason I thought it was recurring was that I kept killing OO when it happened. But if I let the process complete and open the template, then it works without delay on subsequent opens. Perhaps to get it to happen again, it needs to be a fresh install, or maybe a new XP user.
MRU->HI: please have a look. This is not a problem of a specific Writer template causing a loop. This problem occurs when a special setting regarding the Template path has been applied (as described above). I was able to reproduce this once, but not more. Maybe you can find out something more with PB.
