I tried to create a drop cap by right-clicking -> Paragraph -> Drop Caps. As
soon as I click on Display Drop Caps (it's a check-box), writer crashes.

I am using the default OpenOffice with Fedora Core 6. I believe this is version
2.0.4

Works fine here with OO 2.1 on Suse 10.2.
I suggest trying Sun-built OO 2.1. 
Reopen if it crashes then.

Known problem, see issue 72272.
Workround: use a different font than "Nimbus Roman No 9".
