Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 73759
turning symbols by 90° to the left using OOo-pdf generator
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:30:59 UTC
I designed business in OOo. The text in each cell is turned by 90° using the option right-to left (vertical). Creating a PDF-File using the built in feature turns the used symbols from various fonts for phone, mobile and fax to a normal left to right position within the pdf-document. Creating a PDF-file using ghostscript 8.54 and FreePDF XP 3.7.0.2 gives the expected result. I attach the original odt, OOo.pdf and FreePDF files, so you can see the example by yourself.

Confirming with OO 2.1 and b9107 on WinXP - icons in resulting .pdf are rotated differently from .odt.
Reassigned to HI.
HI->PL: See the icons at Phone etc.
I successfully replicated the problem on my machine. I'm using Windows XP SP2 operating system and have OpenOffice 2.1 installed. Here are the steps I went through to replicate the problem 1. Open OpenOffice Writer. 2. Enable Asian Language Support (If it is already enabled skip to step 3) by going to Tool-->Options. Expand "Language Settings" on the left pane and select Languages under it. Check "Enabled for Asian languages" option on the bottom of the window. 3. Open Drawing Toolbar (Views --> Toolbars and make sure Drawing is checked in the submenu). 4. Select the vertical toolbox on the Drawing Toolbar(7th from left). Insert some symbols like phone symbol (Insert --> Special characters) 5. Export to pdf (File --> export to pdf). 6. The symbol is aligned horizontally instead of vertically in the pdf file. Note: If you have Adobe Acrobat Professional installed and you convert to pdf by printing to the "Adobe PDF" printer instead of using "Export to pdf" option then it converts fine.

Just wanted to mention that I used Adobe Acrobat Professional 7
pl->hdu: Same behaviour on Unix, only there it is the same on the display. The reason (in PDF ) is that in PDFWriterImpl::drawLayout reports GF_ROTL for the symbold glyphs.
Looking at the document I think you wanted to use Format->Page->Landscape... The vertical writing feature is intended for asian users (and is only available if Tools->Options->Languages->CJKsupport is selected), where some writing system have a vertical writing direction. For an asian user symbols remaining unrotated are what he probably expects... Anyway, the inconsistency is clearly a bug. We need to check if symbol glyphs should get rotated and then fix all use cases consistently.
