Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 73353
Mailserver rejecting all emails from jpmcc
Last modified: 2007-01-22 13:32:29 UTC
The site mail server is rejecting emails I send. As far as I can see it applies to all lists - here is an example: Jan 11 06:58:06 403lrw postfix/smtp[30670]: E7F2F18690D: to=<logos@marketing.openoffice.org>, relay=none, delay=39199, status=deferred (connect to cylon2.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.18]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon2.sjc.collab.net ) j This is an urgent issue. I suspect it is the reason for a 'lost' posting to a security list, warning that journalists had picked up a story ahead of our official announcement. John (Marketing Project Lead)
Please send a message to Stefan.Taxhet@sun.com and CC: st@openoffice.org. This allows to debug the full header and will give us the IP of your MTA.
Jan 11 18:53:31 403lrw postfix/smtp[4678]: connect to cylon2.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.18]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon2.sjc.collab.net (port 25) Jan 11 18:53:31 403lrw postfix/smtp[4678]: 745DD186919: to=<st@openoffice.org>, relay=none, delay=1, status=deferred (connect to cylon2.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.18]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon2.sjc.collab.net ) Jan 11 18:55:21 403lrw postfix/smtp[4680]: 745DD186919: to=<Stefan.Taxhet@Sun.COM>, relay=btmx1.Sun.COM[150.143.103.54], delay=111, status=sent (250 Message received and queued)
I received the messaged addressed to my @sun account. According to the Received: header the IP address we are looking for is 82.41.57.20 Received: from 403lrw.homelinux.org ([82.41.57.20] [82.41.57.20]) According to http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=82.41.57.20 this IP is in a range blacklisted by several services. The recommendation is to "use your ISPs mail server". Is this an option for you?
The cable service I use is pretty reliable; their mail server is not. 'Range blacklisting' is a very lazy (and inaccurate) tool for email rejection and I'm surprised OOo subscribes to it. If we continue to do so, then there is an obligation on us to report back to the list provider when there are mistakes in the list, and get them corrected. The fact that our mail server is rejecting valid emails isn't a problem for the *sender* of the email to resolve...
John, I strongly recommend to avoid sending messages out of banned IP ranges. Nevertheless, Support, could you please whitelist the IP address range 82.41.0.0/16 (82.41.0.0 - 82.41.255.255).
Accepting the issue
I have filed an internal ticket, will update you once the ip address is whitelisted
When can I expect this to be resolved? Thanks - John
support, would you be able to see if this can be expedited? the user is a lead of a major project. thanks louis
john, in the meanwhile, can you use a google account or some such? louis
Louis, I have asked the internal team to look into this immediately. Would update on their response. Regards, Ramya Support Operations
Louis, The IP address range 82.41.0.0/16 (82.41.0.0 - 82.41.255.255) has been whitelisted. Please ask the reporter to verify. Regards, Ramya Support Operations
Uhm, Support, you need not go through me! :-) The user, John, can surely verify it's working or no on his own and actually communicate with you, once the issue has been filed. For future, please communicate directly with the user. He is, after all, getting these emails, anyway, as he filed this issue. :-) Reassigning to jpmcc.
As of 07:12 GMT nothing appears to have changed: Jan 16 07:12:31 403lrw postfix/smtp[21227]: 138FC186781: to=<jpmcc@openoffice.org>, relay=none, delay=36997, status=deferred (connect to cylon2.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.18]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon2.sjc.collab.net ) John
Reassign to support
support, will you be able to look into this? Thanks louis

John, Will check this internally and would keep you updated. Regards, Ramya Support Operations
Times in UTC/GMT: Jan 17 19:13:55 403lrw postfix/smtp[9810]: 90884186909: to=<logos@marketing.openoffice.org>, relay=none, delay=1, status=deferred (connect to cylon1.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.10]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon1.sjc.collab.net ) Still no progress - John
Support, I'm aware that there are many other things on your collective plate, but this issue is of considerable importance, and not just to the affected project lead (who happens to be *marketing* lead). Please see if you can resolve this soonest! Thanks, Louis
John, Could you please provide the full header for our investigation. Regards, Ramya Support Operations
I'll send another email and wait for the message to time out. However, you already have the error message ...
John , Please include/attached the complete mail header of the mail which you sent out to the list . That would be allow us to diagnose the problem faster . Thank You Jobin.

Have provided the header information to our engineers for investigation.
Any update? I'm still seeing the same error: Jan 19 13:11:14 403lrw postfix/smtp[24645]: 278E21868CF: to=<marcondiscuss@marketing.openoffice.org>, relay=none, delay=103492, status=deferred (connect to cylon1.sjc.collab.net[204.16.104.10]: server refused to talk to me: 554 cylon1.sjc.collab.net ) Can we not just switch off the blacklisting as - judging by the volume of spam that gets through - it seems to be more trouble than it's worth.
The reason that cylons (our AV/AS filter appliance) are refusing mail from this network address is because they're on a black list and the reason the ip range is on a black list is because some hosts in that network block been sending a lot of spam/virus. We don't have any hosts on a whitelist that just allows delivery of mail from any hosts on the cylons (other than our own servers). If we add this network block to the whitelist of some sort that might mean increased number of spam/virus for all Sun customers. As far as we can see there is no way to allow this network of addresses specifically for openoffice.org domain. Stefan & Louis , --->Please note that making this change will affect all Sun sites<--- John could you provide us with a give us a smaller ip address range? Are you the only one facing this problem ? If so, could your provide us with more information, i.e.email address you would be sending the email as, Or is this a group of users having problem sending email from that ip address range? If so you would have to consider writing to your own ISP to take actions to fix the problem of being black listed (this might not be a quick solution). In any case, If you could provide us a smaller ip address range or give us email addresses that are being used to send.We would be able to help you out with the situation. Thanks. Jobin.
See Stefan's note Thu Jan 11 11:44:44 -0800 2007: just fix it for 82.41.57.20 and it'll solve the immediate problem.
John, Have provided the IP information to the engineers .
and I am happy to report I that everything is working again... John
