Looks like a real EOU. Is there someone in the community to create
such an update tool?
Comment 2 lars 2002-08-29 17:27:54 UTC
it's not that difficult

looking at the files in a new version, one just uses folder
comparison software like FolderMatch and then offers changed and new
files seperately.

There must be an installer though to make sure new functionality
registers correctly within OOos ini- and dat- files and within the
Windows registry.
Also the setup program must become aware of the new version, so that
things like "repair" work correctly.

In order to save still more memory, there could be a real patch
mechansim changing and extending those files which need an update
with the new code.
The algorithm looking for code parts of 2 files of different versions
matching could be a brute-force algorithm.

I think that the worst thing is not the download size. The problem is that I have for example personalized all menus, button bars etc in OpenOffice 1.0.0. I had to do it straight again to junp to 1.0.1. So I am refraining from upgrade to 1.0.2 for this only reason... just the possibility to update leaving alone the personal settings: I think they are in some file in you oo.org personal directory...

From 1.0.x to 1.1 (anmd further to 2.0) provides an update path.
Nevertheless one needs to download the whole package which of course
is needed since all files are touched anyway :o)
