Description brody 2002-08-08 08:40:29 UTC
Starting OOo through an to OOo-attached document, which initializes the usage
of configured, but unaccessible directories (e.g. the "wrong" user's temp
directory) displays a dialog "An unrecoverable error has occurred.\n\nAll
modified files...".
Sometimes Dr.Watson is coming after that dialog

In my mind it would be better to say, what problem occured (can't access ...),
so the user isn't as helpless)

Thanks for posting Wolfgang.

Can you list the step you use to reproduce this problem?

I've tried setting my temporary file path to a non-existant path but
OO 1.0.1 does not crash when I start it up.

Unable to duplicate on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OO 1.0.1.
Comment 2 brody 2002-08-19 17:36:13 UTC
Hello prgmgr,
it was NOT a _non_-existing path, but a path, which can not accessed
from a user, but exists, e.g. the temporary path from administrator "c:\Dokumente
und Einstellungen\Administrator\Lokale Einstellungen\Temp" which can not be
accessed, when I'm logged in as Wolfgang (normal user account without any
administrator rights).

To make the failure cleary: I did a single instance
installation (using my Administrator account) and wanted to use the installation
from Wolfgang and started OOo with an existing document after correcting the
sversion.in by hand. OOo started but read its settings from elsewhere (trying using
u.a. admins's temporary dir). Starting OOo from program directory works, but when
loading a dokument it crashes, when using the "bad" directory.

Wolfgang, sorry for the delay in response.

It sounds like you did a single user install, instead of a multi-user
install.

In short, you need to first install OO using the -net option, then
setup OO for each user that needs OO access.

You should not be editing the configuration files by hand to allow OO
to be used my multiple users.

Consider reading this document:

http://documentation.openoffice.org/setup_guide/index.html

Duplicated on Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OO 1.0.1.

This issue is not resolved. No crash should occur. The app should
exit with a warning if it the temp directory is not writable by the
user. As it is, it crashes when the user goes to save for the first
time, and as my Fiancee found out the hard way a couple of times,
looses all data.

Crash==bug != resolved.
Comment 5 brody 2002-09-05 08:27:19 UTC
As the comment from Joseph Tate say "the bug is not fixed"!

You're correct, that I did a mistake by doing an invalid
installation, but as you asked me to describe the bug more clearly, I
didn't a re-install, although I told you the "old story". I
configured the multi-user-installed Ooo 1.0.1 for one user to point
to an not accessible directory and I got the same effect as with the
wrong installation.

The argument "user, you did a mistake, so its not a bug of the
software" is something, I can't accept (it remembers me about an
other big company). Indifferential of the situation the mistake
occurs and there are many more possiblities to retrace it, than my
case, no software has a reason for a crash.

So I'll reopen this issue.

Best regards,
Wolfgang Brodowski

Take it easy peoples. I'm on your side.

I apologize if I've misinterpreted your reports. So let's start from
the beginning again.

Joseph, Wolfgang, what are the steps I need to follow to reproduce
this issue?

I've tried the following and OO did not crash for me:

Win NT 4.0 SP6a, OO 1.0.1 English.

1. Created a directory

    <drive>\install\test

2. Changed the permissions so that only UserX can access
    <drive>\install\test.

Using Windows Explorer, when I click on <drive>\install\test,
I get an "Access Denied" error message.

    So far so good right?

3. Start Writer.

4.  Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->Paths

I change Temporary Files to <drive>\install\test

5. Shutdown Writer.

6. Restart Writer.

Writer opens without any problems, and I can save and open
documents without any problems.

I've tried changing "My Documents" to the Administrators home
directory and Writer still runs.

Please reopen if you can still reproduce it in OOo 1.1 beta1.
