I have a document saved as a Word 2000 document type. There was a section of 
text that was in Bold (Not sure how it became bold in the first place), so i 
highlighted it, and removed the bold, and then saved the document.
Upon reopening the document, the bold style had reappeared.....

Perhaps this is a known (and fixed in a later still unreleased
version). Try tools->options->Language Settings-> enable asian support
and now in the character dialog you will have the ability to set asian
bold as well. The problem is likely that word has only one setting for
bold and we have two :-( so in an older version western off and asian
on ended up being bold on in word. Turn both off and see does that
work around the problem.

As mentioned on the qa dev list on March 5th I will close all resolved duplicate
