Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 67332
wrong result summing up a column
Last modified: 2006-07-28 13:18:23 UTC
I just copied a column from a MS-Word document and pasted it in calc to sum up the values and noticed that the sum() function ignored a value which had leading spaces. Afterwards I rechecked in Excel which calculated the sum correctly ignoring the leading spaces.

have a look to issue n. 5658 In OO there is a difference from Text and Number that is marked. Engineering doesn't want to make the difference lite as Excel. So this is by design. If it is your issue, I think that your can be closed ad invalid. Let me know
Well, thats fine for the design part, but when I change my point of view and act as a user and not as a programmer I just want to copy and paste values to sum them up. So I mark the stuff I want and paste it to calc and all what I see is that it makes a wrong result. I as a programmer already had that problem and I understand the reasons but not a quite normal user. BTW: It took me a little time to actually find the problem. So I think at this point we have a problem with the design that should be fixed. And don't forget to think like a user even if it hurts ;-)
Hi, Excel calculates with text values, Calc does not as text is text and not a number and you can't calculate with text. Your example shows that the cell containing numbers with leading spaces is interpreted as text. So this is a double to Issue 5658 . Frank *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 5658 ***
