Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 6494
Better and more logical warning when saving and working in alien file formats
Last modified: 2013-02-07 22:39:08 UTC
- when saving a document in a not SO6 format there pops-up a warning; that's okay. But when saving the same document again in the same format during the same session, the warning pops-up again too; that's no okay; shouldn't be. f.e. in Calc. The app. can assume one knows after selecting the data type. Also this should only occur if there really (!!) are incompatibilities or if behaviour in the app. for the format will be different than in OO and one has to consider that.

TM->FT: This one is more a wish for an enhancement or a change in a feature than a bug. So please have a look. Thanks !
the warning only pops-up when selecting "save". it does not pop up when selecting "save as..." - it should pop up when selecting "save as..." - that should be the only time it pops up as mentioned before - it should only pop up if necessary as mentioned before - it should show the user what exactly is causing compatibility problems; for that reason, each Calc element could contain a flag "ExcelCompatible" for example; and then those elements where that flags attribute is 0 are shown to the user; perhaps with further info on how to avoid these incompatibilities. Note: the flag is not stored in each instant of the element but static like: you keep a database (compatibility table) where you look up for each element that is used in the current file what the compatibility state is for the selected file format.
Better and more logical warning when saving and working in alien file formats. Example: when saving a document in a not SO6 format there pops-up a warning; that's okay. But when saving the same document again in the same format during the same session, the warning pops-up again too; that's no okay; shouldn't be. E.g. in Calc. The app. can assume one knows after selecting the data type.

I am currently evaluating OOo and I can see my users getting confused when saving MS office files because of the warnings when saving. An enhancement to the save dialoge (as already suggested) would be great. Perhaps only warn if data / formating is actually going to be lost, and report what that would be. I know this would slow down saving. Maybe have it as an option. May be an option to never warn for selected file formats (risky I know).
I spent several days editing a .xls file adding in a bunch of OO basic macros. I regularly saved my file. Eventually I got very lucky and OO crashed. When I re-loaded my .xls file you can imagine my shock at not finding any of my macro code there! That's why I said I was lucky that OO crashed. If it hadn't I might have worked for weeks without realizing that OO wasn't saving ANY of my OO basic macros into the xls file. Even though I pressed save. I NEVER got any kind of warning what so ever. I had the identical problem in using the formula editor in the HTML file I was editing in OO. The file saved without any warnings what so ever even though it was only saving the graphic of the formula and not the original formula content itself. Please, when saving XLS files with Macros or HTML files with formulas, please, put up a warning dialog letting the user know that their data is not going to be fully saved! Thanks! I am using OO 1.1.0 on Mandrake 9.2.
